There is no hiding away from how dreadful the end to the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership season was for Glasgow Rangers under Danny Rohl.
They lost the first four games after the split, pulling themselves out of the race for the title, before a 5-2 win against Falkirk that was ultimately meaningless on the final day.
Rohl’s side crumbled under pressure as the title race got into the final sprint, losing to Motherwell, Hearts, Celtic, and Hibernian, and they eventually finished ten points adrift of Celtic in first place.
The Light Blues lost control of games too often, allowing opposition midfields to get the better of them, and that should cause the German head coach to rethink his midfield set-up heading into next season.
Nicolas Raskin and Tochi Chukwuani were the preferred pairing in the second half of the 2025/26 campaign, but a new central midfielder may be needed.
Why Rangers need to sign their next Glen Kamara
In the upcoming summer transfer window, the Scottish giants need to sign a player like Glen Kamara, who was a midfield metronome for Steven Gerrard when the club last won the Premiership title.
The Finland international was exceptional at dictating play and controlling matches for the Light Blues, playing 33 times in the league as the Gers went unbeaten to win the division.
Kamara sat at the base of the midfield and was constantly available to his teammates in possession to knit moves together with both his technical quality and mobility.

No Rangers player in any position made more than 1,613 passes in the Premiership this season, which shows that Rohl is currently lacking a metronome who can dominate games for his team on the ball.
That is why the Gers must push through with a deal to sign a midfield metronome who caught the eye for another side in the Scottish top-flight this season.
Like prime Glen Kamara: Rangers could sign Premiership star for £3m
It was reported last month that the Light Blues have already held talks over a potential deal to sign central midfielder Elliot Watt, who could be like Kamara in his prime at Ibrox.
Motherwell are reportedly looking for a fee of £3m for the Scottish ace in the upcoming summer transfer window, and Rohl must urge the board to pay that price to bring him to Glasgow in the coming weeks.
The 26-year-old talent’s performances in the Premiership for ‘Well this season suggest that he has the quality to be like Kamara when he was in his prime in the 2020/21 campaign.

In fact, Watt ranks even higher among his positional peers than Kamara did in several possession-based metrics, including passes made, touches, and ball recoveries.
No midfielder in the Premiership completed more passes than the Motherwell star’s 2,347. He completed at least 734 more passes than every single player in Rohl’s squad, as Raskin led the way with 1,613 passes made.
RangersJournal creator and writer Kai Watson called the Scottish gem the “best midfielder in the league this season” and the statistics make it hard to disagree with that opinion, given how he ranked against his peers.
Like Kamara did when the Gers last won the league, Watt excelled at getting on the ball and progressing play with his passes, creating chances for his teammates, whilst also having the mobility and positioning to constantly recover the ball for his side.
Every team that wants to dominate games and control the ball in a title race need a player like Kamara or Watt, as Celtic have with Callum McGregor. Rangers do not have a player like that at the moment.
In fact, the Gers have lacked a player like that ever since they sold Kamara to English side Leeds United in the summer of 2023, which was three years ago.
Now, Rangers have the opportunity to sign a player who has been playing like prime Kamara, Watt, for just £3m when the summer transfer window opens for business.
The club have to take advantage of his opportunity and bring the Scottish talent over to Ibrox to make him their second signing after Lawrence Shankland’s move from Hearts.
Better than Dan Neil: Future £60m star is now keen to join Rohl at Rangers
A move to Dan Neil could be on the cards, although Rangers may have their eye on an even bigger midfield talent.
