Tottenham Hotspur supporters might have watched USA’s blistering start to the World Cup with smiles on their faces as Mauricio Pochettino reminded the world of his stylish attacking football.

Ange Postecoglou might have delivered silverware for the Lilywhites in 2025, but Poch remains the most fondly remembered coach of modern times, creating a bona fide dynasty over nearly 300 games.

With Spurs in a tail-spin earlier this season, ENIC group tagged the Argentinian manager as a candidate to replace beleaguered interim coach Igor Tudor and bring Tottenham back into the ascendancy.

Instead, Roberto De Zerbi was picked as the man for the job, and having saved Spurs from relegation, the powers that be must be confident that they have made the right decision.

De Zerbi leading Spurs talks for new winger

Tottenham danced with danger in the Premier League this season, and while De Zerbi made a significant impact when arriving in March, he now needs top signings to guide Spurs back into the ascendancy.

Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo is quickly emerging as a top target for the Londoners, having become unsettled at Anfield after Arne Slot’s dismissal. Liverpool want £60m, and the Dutchman is coming off the back of a poor season in the Premier League.

Free transfers with Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have already been agreed, while efforts continue to sign big-money Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke.

Forwards are the order of the day here, though, and while Gakpo would be an interesting signing, Spurs have their sights trained on an even bigger prize.

According to TEAMtalk, Gakpo isn’t the only Premier League winger on Tottenham’s radar, with club-to-club discussions ongoing with Manchester City for the 22-year-old Savinho.

Savinho is one of the most exciting young attackers in Europe, but Pep Guardiola has largely kept him on the fringes, and after failing with a £60m bid last summer, Spurs have now received the green light to complete a deal.

Indeed, one year later, nothing has changed, only Savinho’s resolve to leave the Etihad Stadium and join a Tottenham side who can give him what he is searching for.

Whether Tottenham have the means to sign both Savinho and Gakpo is another question, but surely there’s only one route to go down if a decision has to be made.

Why Savinho would be a better Spurs signing than Gakpo

There is a reason that Pep Guardiola welcomed Savinho into his Manchester City brood when still a teenager. His struggles for a starting berth stem down to the elite competition he is up against, and at Spurs, he could find the perfect platform to reach his world-class potential.

Predicted to become a “superstar” by Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson, Savinho has the pace and the physicality and the potency. We saw this across his first year in England, dazzling with his footwork, control and creativity.

Savinho scarcely started in the Premier League this season, but looking at his maiden term in England, you can see why there is so much hype around him, and why he would make bigger waves than Gakpo for De Zerbi’s Tottenham.

Gakpo might offer more of a clinical threat in the final third, but he has been too predictable and one-dimensional for Liverpool this season, and it does feel like he could struggle to produce talismanic results for a Spurs side in desperate need of a new focal point.

Savinho, conversely, brings a multi-faceted approach, and as he goes from strength to strength over the next few years, De Zerbi could nurture a world-class talent. Could the same projection be applied to Gakpo?

Analyst Raj Chohan has recently described Gakpo as a “Europa League-level player“, but Spurs have won that tournament, and plan on working their way up to the highest level of continental football once again.

Watching Pochettino make a winning start to the World Cup must have felt nostalgic for Spurs fans, and while he could have done a job at the club once again, De Zerbi has thus far proved an inspired appointment.

If he manages to sign Savinho, as feels likely given the current noise, Tottenham’s chances of returning to the Premier League ascendancy would significantly increase.
