Liverpool‘s World Cup stars are well and truly off the mark after the weekend’s action and they could now be joined by a shock arrival from the tournament this summer.
Alexander Isak put his injury-wrecked first season with Liverpool behind him this weekend, grabbing Sweden’s second goal before seizing on a defensive mishap to provide Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres with the third as Sweden cruised to a 5-1 win over Tunisia.
Virgil van Dijk meanwhile had to settle for a draw in Netherlands’ opener against Japan, as they were pegged back twice to share the points at 2-2, but the Liverpool skipper did find the back of the net with a clinical guided header.
Florian Wirtz’s Germany swept Curacao aside after an early scare, with Wirtz providing the assist for the German opener in a 7-1 win.
Reds fans have also been keeping an eye on Yan Diomande – the RB Leipzig winger was awarded man of the match for his display in Ivory Coast’s 1-0 win over Ecuador.
Liverpool have been linked with a £100m move for the 19 year-old, but it appears he’s not the only star at this summer’s tournament who could be on his way to Anfield.

Liverpool set to re-sign Darwin Nunez
Indeed, according to Uruguayan media, Darwin Nunez is set to rejoin Liverpool.
The reliable Martin Charquero shared the claim from his colleague, Juan Pablo Romero, on Monday after the transfer window officially opened.
“Darwin Nunez returns to Liverpool. The confirmation will not be given in these days since the player asked to be focused with the Uruguayan National Team.”
They claim Nunez is all set to return to Merseyside this summer, but the deal won’t be announced immediately so he can focus on Uruguay’s efforts in North America.
Interestingly, Romero is at the hotel being used by Marcelo Bielsa’s side, so one would be hard pressed to find a source closer to the story.
Nunez was sold to Al-Hilal last summer for £46m after scoring just five Premier League goals in Arne Slot’s title-winning first season.
However, the 26 year-old did register 20 goals and 11 assists across two seasons under Jurgen Klopp, and there is a feeling Andoni Iraola’s arrival will see Liverpool revert back to the high-intensity style they played so effectively under the German.
“He had absolutely more than an OK first season but he had to adapt, that’s done, and he is settled in the middle of the team,” Klopp said during Nunez’s time in England.
“He loves to play for this team together with these boys and has quality coming out of his ears, to be honest.
Better than Barcola: Iraola leading Liverpool move to sign £130m star
Liverpool could be about to secure a move for a hugely talented star this summer.
“Is he at his absolute peak in general? Not now for us. But can he develop? Yes. Is he a threat all the time? Yes.”
