Chelsea don’t like the taste of mundanity, but the 2025/26 campaign was uninspiring and unsuccessful for the Blues, who finished tenth in the Premier League.
Though Chelsea have had their ups and downs over the past decade or so, it does feel like this juncture is particularly significant for the BlueCo regime, whose scattergun approach in the transfer market has failed to yield the right rewards: sustainable success of the highest degree.
There is a marked lack of superstar quality at Stamford Bridge, and Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez‘s futures play into the point that new coach Xabi Alonso has his work cut out. Alonso needs to sign players who can emulate those once at the pinnacle in west London.
The heroes of yesteryear are no longer influencing things at Chelsea, and the sale of Cucurella, as well as Fernandez’s potential exit this summer, demands precision in the transfer market over the next few months.
Chelsea have already agreed deal for Cucurella replacement
Cucurella, 27, has been “absolutely incredible” for Chelsea this season, but he was always going to pine for the exit after Chelsea finished tenth, thus ending their association with the European scene (for now).
Replacing him isn’t going to be easy, but it has to be done.
Chelsea have been linked with Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall in recent weeks, a player who they previously had on the books, a player who won their Academy Player of the Season in 2022.
Hall is worth £70m, though, and Chelsea may have already agreed a deal for the perfect Cucurella heir.
As per The Athletic, Chelsea have agreed a deal with sister club Strasbourg for the versatile Valentin Barco, who can play as a left-back or in midfield.
The 21-year-old certainly fits the bill, and while he has confirmed that he is leaving Ligue 1 this summer, Chelsea have yet to ratify the supposed agreement, or indeed reveal that a deal has been concluded.
Barco joined Strasbourg for £8m, and the figure that Chelsea are paying to bring him to London is uncertain right now.
Why Barco can replace Cucurella at Chelsea
Barco, like Cucurella, has played for Brighton in the past, but he was too young and lacked the requisite experience to nail down a starting berth in the Premier League.

However, the 21-year-old Barco has since built himself up in France, and across 27 Ligue 1 matches this season, creating 13 big chances and won 5.5 duels per game on average, with a success rate of 57%.
In that, he has shown that he has what it takes to replicate Cucurella’s presence down the left, a stern and able defender who has a natural well of creativity to draw from. He is athletic and mobile, and it’s worth noting that Chelsea’s former Spain star dribbled infrequently in the Premier League this season, only completing 33% of his attempts.
Snappy, canny full-backs are a prerequisite for Alonso’s ball-playing system, combining calculated build-up play with an aggressiveness that is encouraged through intense wide players creating width up and down the touchline.
Barco might actually be more suited to Alonso’s system. Of course, he is not so refined, nor is he accomplished and experienced at the highest level. But Chelsea do like to shape players to their own design, and Barco will fit that approach like a tailor-made glove.
Barco has spent much of his time in France as a midfielder, but his versatility is his biggest strength, and given that he has been hailed as the “Argentinian Marcelo” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig in the past, it’s fair to say he knows what it takes to be an effective left-back.
Whether Barco earns many minutes under Lionel Scaloni in North America over the next month remains to be seen, but he has the potential to be a superstar, and is a player who would align with BlueCo’s youthful transfer strategy, while offering maturity and experience that could help lift Chelsea back into the limelight.
