After missing out on Victor Munoz courtesy of Liverpool’s surprise hijack, Newcastle United have faced more rejection in pursuit of signing a Serie A sensation.
Liverpool hijack Newcastle’s Munoz move
It’s déjà vu for the Magpies, who have missed out to those at Anfield yet again. Having spent the entirety of last summer attempting to keep hold of Alexander Isak, before the Reds finally sealed their deal, and then also missing out on Hugo Ekitike to those at Anfield, the last thing that Newcastle needed was a repeat 12 months later.
It looked like Munoz was almost guaranteed to become a Newcastle player. They had a free run as far as Premier League clubs were concerned. The Osasuna man would become their Anthony Gordon replacement.
They simply cannot hesitate in the current market, however, and a brief pause has allowed Liverpool to sneak in and secure the Spaniard’s signature, leaving the Magpies back at square one.
Those in Tyneside have now got it all to do and have shifted their focus towards signing a Serie A sensation, launching an offer to land their second deal of the summer.

Newcastle receive response after offer for Serie A gem
Looking to recover after Munoz, the Magpies have moved on. According to TuttoMercatoWeb in Italy, as relayed by Sport Witness, Newcastle launched an offer to sign Sergei Levak worth around €10m (£9m).
However, Atalanta instantly rejected that offer in what must feel like Groundhog Day for those at St James’ Park, having been told the Italian outfit have no intention whatsoever of selling this summer.
The 20-year-old midfielder is a rising star in Italy and did enough to burst onto Newcastle’s radar. Just like last year, though, it could be a summer of rejection for Eddie Howe and co.
Whilst Levak is yet to make his mark on Atalanta’s first team, he was regarded as one of the best talents in Serie C last season and his side’s decision to reject Newcastle’s offer suggests that he will have a pathway into their strongest side.
As for the Magpies, it remains to be seen where they go next. They could launch another offer to sign the midfielder, but first must recover from back-to-back rejections in the space of 48 hours.
After missing out on European football last season and now two transfer targets, they’ve got it all to do in Tyneside.
