Liverpool did not need to think twice when weighing up a bid for Osasuna’s Victor Munoz, hijacking Newcastle United’s top target once again.

For all the world, Munoz appeared to be headed for St. James’ Park, but like Hugo Ekitike like summer, he has completed a move to Liverpool, who activated his £34.5m release clause.

It’s a shrewd move, and one that feels in keeping with the ethos and strategy that was set up and sustained across a sweeping era of success under Jurgen Klopp’s wing.

Of course, Liverpool are not afraid to spend significant sums either, and that is something to keep in mind as FSG look to add Yan Diomande into new head coach Andoni Iraola‘s squad.

Liverpool in talks to sign star alongside Diomande

Liverpool are looking to bounce right back into the ascendancy, and with Mohamed Salah having drawn down the curtain on his Anfield career, Diomande has been marked as the perfect successor.

Personal terms are close to being agreed, and an opening offer has already been knocked back by the Germans.

After such a dismal Premier League campaign, Liverpool can ill-afford another sub-standard season, and it’s not just the frontline that needs sorting out.

In midfield, Liverpool’s engine room has run out of steam. Alexis Mac Allister’s future is uncertain after an awful year, and Curtis Jones is also linked with a move to Italy.

To combat this problem, Liverpool have set their sights on Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton. That’s according to TEAMtalk, who reveal that Liverpool are fighting Tottenham Hotspur for the midfield maestro.

Crystal Palace insist that they have not received any formal approaches from suitors, but intrigue is still intensifying, and Liverpool have engaged in discussions with the player’s camp over the past few weeks, considered among the favourites to complete a deal.

Valued at £70m, Wharton’s future at Selhurst Park is uncertain now that Oliver Glasner has left the club. Moreover, his omission from Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions World Cup squad could see him warm to the idea of moving to Merseyside pretty quickly.

Why Adam Wharton is perfect for Liverpool

Wharton would add a dimension to a Liverpool midfield whose deterioration has been caused by a mix of physical regression and a lack of progression when on the ball.

Wharton, conversely, has been riding the crest of a wave with Crystal Palace, and he is now established as “one of the best – not just in England, but the world“, according to Glasner.

His passing. It’s remarkable, it really is. Wharton knows how to unlock a tough defence, with analyst Ben Mattinson dubbing him a “cheat code” on the ball. There was a lack of connectivity under Arne Slot at Anfield last season, and Wharton would fix that, finding the likes of Diomande with regularity.

RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande-1

Diomande: hungry, ferocious, tenacious. He is determined to reach the top, and he has started on strong footing in that. For Leipzig, he scored 13 goals and supplied ten assists across all competitions, and his pace and energy and power has set him apart from so many other young and talented wingers.

Bringing Diomande and Wharton together would see Liverpool’s different parts click like interlocking joints, the English midfielder’s combative defending and incisive passing finding Diomande, who breezes into the box, collects, shimmies this way and that, strikes on goal, or maybe feints and finds a teammate, the likes of Munoz or Alexander Isak.

Wharton would enable this. He ranked among the top 5% of Premier League midfielders for big chances created in 2025/26, sitting deep and directing the build-up but also moving forward and winning possession in the final third. He would trump Iraola’s current central options.

For example, were you to look at how Wharton matches up with Mac Allister over the course of the 2025/26 Premier League, you would see that Liverpool could secure a major improvement in the middle of the park.

Mac Allister’s decline has been sad to see, but Liverpool cannot sit on sentiment here, and must act to bring themselves back into the limelight.

Wharton could be the key. He is a robust and proven Premier League star who could thrive in Iraola’s Liverpool system, forming a connection with Diomande that would fix a number of the problems that sent Slot’s tenure in a spin.
