Everton might have emerged from the troubled waters that plagued them for years under old owner Farhad Moshiri, but the Friedkin Group and David Moyes are still trying to find a winning formula in the Premier League.

Considering the emphatic start that Moyes made midway through the 2024/25 season, when he replaced a depleted Sean Dyche, there’s something in fan frustration at the Hill Dickinson, with the recent campaign petering out after showing such promise.

Everton failed to win any of their final seven Premier League fixtures of the campaign. But it was the vacuous nature of the Toffees’ playing style during those end-of-season weeks that has created a malaise.

One thing is clear: Everton cannot progress without the right first-team improvements. Technical director Angus Kinnear needs to hit the right beats here.

Everton open talks to sign Premier League star

Everton have a lot to juggle at the moment. Moyes’ squad has not yet been strengthened. Defensive reinforcements are paramount, and so is enriching a faltering frontline.

Efforts are underway to sign a striker, but some would argue that a permanent deal for Manchester City’s Jack Grealish is even more important. The 30-year-old spent the 2025/26 season on loan with the Merseysiders; he impressed, though hasn’t played since January due to a foot injury.

Barry

Everton may need to replace Thierno Barry in the summer transfer market.

Grealish is a superstar, and he certainly made his presence known across those exciting opening months. But Everton need more, and they have trained their sights on a Grealish-like star who could make a big difference next year.

According to the Daily Mail, Everton have made contact with Harry Wilson, whose contract with Fulham will expire at the end of June.

Leeds United appear to be the frontrunners in the race to sign the one-time Liverpool academy star, and Aston Villa have also made an approach, but Wilson has ties to the city of Liverpool, and Everton could offer him a starring role on the right wing.

Why Wilson can be Everton’s next Grealish

Wilson, 29, is coming off his strongest season in the top flight of English football, hailed as “the form player in the Premier League” by Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley. In the view of one notable podcast, he was “one of the Premier League’s best players” in general.

He scored ten goals and supplied seven assists for the Cottagers.

Wales international Wilson has always been capable of the spectacular, but perhaps he would agree that consistency has evaded him. Not any more. Now he feels complete in his performance, and his intelligent yet creative qualities could see him establish himself as another Grealish in Everton’s squad.

Not just clinical (Wilson incredibly missed only one big chance throughout the 2025/26 Premier League season), he also created eight big chances and completing 81% of his passes.

Like Grealish in his current iteration, Wilson did not dribble with the unrlenting intensity of, say, Iliman Ndiaye, but he was dangerous whem he did, completing 55% of his attempts there.

Creativity hasn’t always been Moyes’ friend during his second spell at Everton, and Wilson would help change that. He would ease the playmaking burden on Grealish, should the Man City man return, and he would add depth and dynamism down the right, also capable of shifting into a central role when need be.

Wilson enjoyed himself in the Premier League last season, ageing like fine wine. Moyes would benefit immensely from welcoming such a talismanic and exciting attacking midfielder, someone with an element of Grealish about him.

Perhaps the most exciting part is that both veterans could play together at the Hill Dickinson next season, something that would only strengthen Everton’s case for a much-improved season.
