As ever, Manchester United are at the thumping heart of the summer transfer window, yet to make a signing, but advancing across multiple fronts to propel the Michael Carrick era even further forward.
Last year, it was all about the frontline for Ruben Amorim’s side, who spent close to £200m on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. Work may still be needed up top – outlined by interest in forwards such as Eli Junior Kroupi and Julian Alvarez – but the focus has been shifted to the centre of the park.
Casemiro has departed Old Trafford now that his contract has expired, and the Red Devils’ need for midfielders may well have been aggravated by Manuel Ugarte’s suspected knee injury, which could rule him out for up to a year.
Kobbie Mainoo has been resurgent under Carrick’s wing, but it’s clear that United need more quality and dynamism in midfield, so Bruno Fernandes can keep on shining, so Man United can keep on winning.
Man United target travelling for his medical
The midfield market is somewhat in overdrive right now, with any number of high-profile Premier League stars being targeted by outfits across the division.
United are no different, and while they withdrew from the big-money race for Manchester City-bound Elliot Anderson, they are set to sign Ederson and West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes is at the top of United’s shortlist to strengthen thereafter, with Jason Wilcox and the rest of the decision-makers ready to fight Tottenham for his signature.
Sandro Tonali’s name has also been mentioned, and if we can say anything with absolute certainty, it is that the Red Devils are in pursuit of an elite midfielder this summer.

However, shrewder signings will also support United in their ambitious climb back to the top, and INEOS have also worked quietly to sign a teenage prospect who could develop into a superstar, someone who could rival the likes of Mainoo.
Well, according to journalist Pipe Sierra, Cristian Orozco is headed for Manchester on Sunday, set to undergo medical examinations and then be “officially announced”.
Giuseppe Antonaccio, Man United’s chief scout, has led the process, and will be there with Orozco when he imminently puts pen to paper.
The 17-year-old will link straight up with United’s U18s ahead of pre-season in Germany, and while a deal has been “in place” since September 2025, INEOS have now put the final strokes on a transfer which could provide Carrick with a generational talent, someone who could emulate Mainoo in the United midfield.
Why Orozco can be the new Kobbie Mainoo
Mainoo is Manchester United’s most exciting talent, the starboy from Stockport, he faltered under Amorim but has since been reborn with Carrick at the helm, the manager actually saying toward the end of the 2025/26 season that he “epitomises this football club“.
Orozco is not coming for the young midfielder’s crown, but he can certainly rival Mainoo in the middle of the park when he first arrives at the Theatre of Dreams. The young Colombian has actually been hailed as “the next Casemiro” by one analyst.
He might only be 17, but Orozco is already emerging as a real talent, with a natural physicality and strength that may see him thrive in the United centre.
Dethroning Mainoo as the club’s star up-and-comer will take some doing, but Orozco has the talent to achieve exactly that, bearing a completeness that has served Mainoo, England star, very well in his own development.

He has some learning to do, but Orozco might just have all the attributes to develop into a world-class anchor at the heart of the Old Trafford pitch. Given his natural athleticism, he might do it before fully growing into his skin, thus emerging as the new Mainoo.
Player scout Antonio Mango has also issued a glowing endorsement of the player’s skillset, saying, “Orozco operates somewhat of a defensive minded midfielder but far more than that, he can play.” He’s dynamic and multi-functional.
Whether he outstrips Mainoo remains to be seen, but the young Colombian has the potential, and he could become a real superstar under a manager in Carrick who has shown he is willing to promote youth.
