Tottenham’s pursuit of Sandro Tonali appears to be gathering fresh momentum as the club continue their ambitious midfield rebuild.
Spurs have been in discussions over a move for the Newcastle midfielder throughout the summer, viewing the Italy international as one of their priority targets after completing an £85 million deal for Mateus Fernandes.
Several outlets have also reported that Tottenham have now returned with an improved offer worth around £90 million as they attempt to convince Newcastle to sanction a sale.
While negotiations remain ongoing, the North London club have now moved to strengthen their financial position ahead of any potential breakthrough.
Tottenham agree £50m deal with Brighton over Luka Vuskovic exit
According to Fabrizio Romano this afternoon, Tottenham have now reached an agreement with Brighton over the sale of highly rated defender Luka Vušković.
Romano reports that Brighton will pay an initial £46 million, with a sell-on clause capable of taking the overall package beyond the £50 million mark.
The deal also includes personal terms already being agreed, paving the way for the Croatian youngster to continue his development on the south coast.
Romano adds that the significant fee generated by Vuskovic’s “massive” exit leaves Tottenham ready to go “all in” for Tonali as they look to complete another marquee signing.
Vušković leaves Tottenham with a huge reputation despite never fully establishing himself in the first team.
Luka Vuskovic’s promise opens door for Tottenham’s Tonali deal
The centre-back emerged through Hajduk Split’s academy before completing a move to Spurs as one of Europe’s most highly regarded teenage defenders.
During his loan spells, he continued to impress with his composure in possession, aerial dominance and maturity beyond his years.
His technical ability and confidence playing out from the back made him one of Croatia’s brightest defensive prospects.
Brighton have built an excellent reputation for developing young players before turning them into established Premier League performers, making the move an intriguing one for all parties.
For Tottenham, the transfer represents another example of the club balancing long-term planning with immediate ambition.
Selling a promising young player for a fee that could exceed £50 million provides significant financial flexibility while helping fund a move for Tonali.
It also reflects De Zerbi’s desire to strengthen the current first-team squad rather than relying solely on future potential.
From Tottenham’s perspective, parting with Vušković is not without risk given his enormous ceiling as a defender, with Vuskovic playing his way into the Bundesliga Team of the Season on loan at Hamburg last year.
However, if his departure helps unlock a key deal for De Zerbi, and Vuskovic was allegedly pushing to leave for Brighton in his pursuit of guaranteed playing time.
