With a mini-saga regarding Granit Xhaka’s future quickly coming to a close, Sunderland have turned their focus straight towards incomings of their own.

The Black Cats have got European football to offer these days and that has only enhanced their ambitions. So much so that those on Wearside have reportedly set their sights on names like Oscar Mingueza and one of the breakout stars of the World Cup, Matias Galarza.

Football FanCast’s Verdict

Credibility

Sunderland have certainly kept a keen eye on the 2026 World Cup, as they look to sign the next top star. Galarza has been one of the standout names for Paraguay, reaching the last 16 in shock fashion, and a move is now feasible.

Finances

It’s River Plate who should be most pleased by the midfielder’s World Cup performance. They’ve now set a fresh valuation as they aim to cash in. Whilst a new number is yet to become clear, their initial €5m (£4m) asking price is expected to increase.

Insight

The World Cup is built for break-out stars and Galarza is exactly that. He’s completed 1.21 dribbles per game at the tournament, driving Paraguay forward, and covered more ground than most out of possession, winning 8.76 duels per game. He is a true all-rounder.

Impact

A move to Sunderland would be huge for the 24-year-old’s career and it would also hand Regis Le Bris some crucial squad depth ahead of balancing European and domestic football next season.

It’s a hectic race for Galarza’s signature, but Sunderland may hope that their European muscles are enough to barge fellow interested parties aside.

Race leader names in battle to sign Galarza

As reported by Greek outlet Sportdog and relayed by Sport Witness, Sunderland are now racing to sign Galarza from River Plate.

The South American club were ready to sell the midfielder for around £4m before the World Cup but, after his performances, they’re now happy to green-light a move – but only for a bigger transfer fee.

It’s sparked quite the battle and not one that Sunderland are leading.

Instead, it’s Olympiacos and Getafe who are reportedly in pole position to land the Paraguay star – leaving the Black Cats with plenty of work to do.

Sunderland should push to sign Galarza

Squad depth will be more important than ever next season and Sunderland must get their transfer window right. They’re not short on ambition, far from it in fact, but that doesn’t mean they can overlook the likes of Galarza.

River Plate are yet to name their new valuation, but the midfielder is unlikely to come at a premium by Premier League standards. If it’s in an affordable range, then Sunderland would be wise to jump ahead of rival suitors.

Galarza has showcased his talent on the biggest stage, both in and out of possession, and that should be enough to lure the Black Cats into a deal this summer.
