Manchester United’s summer transfer window certainly has gone the way Michael Carrick will have anticipated after he was handed the manager’s job on a permanent basis.
The 44-year-old has made it clear he wants added midfield reinforcements this summer, but his and INEOS’ efforts have been to no avail over the last few months.
Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes appeared to be three of the Red Devils’ key targets going into the ongoing summer transfer window.
However, all three of the aforementioned talents have moved to other Premier League outfits and have forced Carrick and his team to target alternative options.
New additions desperately need to be made before the season commences in late August, with a repeat of the 2024/25 campaign simply not an option for the Red Devils.
The difference between Bruno playing as a CAM & CM for United
Ruben Amorim’s period as United manager was certainly one to forget as he made numerous outrageous calls – none more so than operating with Bruno Fernandes as a central midfielder.
The Portuguese international had been a mainstay in the number ten position prior to his compatriot’s arrival – but Amorim still decided such a switch was the best course of action.
During his 36 outings in England’s top-flight, the 31-year-old managed to score eight times and laid on 10 assists, a tally still the highest of any player in the senior ranks.
However, the Red Devils massively suffered as a result of Fernandes’ positional change, subsequently ending the 2024/25 campaign in a record-low 15th position.
Carrick’s appointment last term saw a significant change in the Portuguese national’s performances after moving the midfielder back into a more natural attacking role.
Bruno ended last campaign with a staggering 21 assists – subsequently breaking the Premier League record for the most assists in a single season by a player.

Such a change highlights the importance of keeping Bruno in his natural position, which further demonstrates as to why INEOS need to get their chequebook out and land a truly elite forward capable of putting away all of the opportunities he creates.
Man Utd could seal Bruno Fernandes’ dream signing
There’s no denying United’s third-place finish in the Premier League last season wouldn’t have been possible had it not been for the efforts of Fernandes in the final third.
He undoubtedly needs added help in the midfield department to take the Red Devils to the next level, but other areas of the pitch could also be reinforced ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The frontline is another area which could see new additions arrive, with players able to benefit from the talents of the Portuguese international behind them at Old Trafford.
It’s been reported by TEAMtalk this week that United are preparing a move for Bayern Munich centre-forward Harry Kane should he become available, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe ‘dreaming’ of completing a move.
The English international is yet to pen a new deal at the Allianz Arena and INEOS are said to be huge admirers of the striker – even being willing to adjust their budget to land the forward.
It’s not the first time the Red Devils have been keen on a move for the 32-year-old, and it’s not a surprise when delving into his mind-boggling numbers from the last 12 months.
Kane, who’s been hailed as “the current best player in the world” by journalist Daniel Storey, made 56 appearances for the German outfit last campaign, finding the back of the net a staggering 64 times whilst laying on eight assists for his teammates.
As part of his remarkable goalscoring tally, he netted 36 times in the Bundesliga – helping Vincent Kompany’s side win the title for the second season in a row.
Even at the current World Cup, Kane has continued his tremendous goalscoring form – subsequently scoring six goals in his six appearances for the England national team.
His ability to find the back of the net has been consistently evident throughout his entire career, as seen by his tally of at least 24 goals scored in each of his last 12 seasons.
Natural born goalscorers are extremely hard to come by in the modern game, with United having the perfect opportunity to secure the services of a deadly talisman this summer. Can you imagine his goal threat combined with Fernandes’ ability to pick a lock? This could United’s best partnership since Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo were linking up together at Old Trafford.
It’s unclear how much of an opportunity the Red Devils have to land Kane this summer, but INEOS should jump at the opportunity to land the 32-year-old ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
A combination of Kane and Fernandes at Old Trafford would be a generational one, not to mention it would massively increase the club’s chances of ending their Premier League title drought.
