The midfield merry-go-round is continuing to cause drama in the Premier League. This time, it’s Manchester United who have set things in motion, agreeing a deal to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.

The Red Devils have triggered the Belgian’s £35m release clause to land a bargain deal and force the Villans into the market for an incoming of their own.

Despite already closing in on Johan Manzambi, hijacking Newcastle in the process, those in the Midlands are now expected to accelerate their move for Lucas Bergvall.

Football FanCast’s Verdict

Credibility

Bergvall has reportedly made it clear to Spurs that he would like to explore his options and whilst they did not want to sanction a move at the start of the summer, the arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes certainly hands them more security to do so. Villa, meanwhile, are now in a more urgent position after Tielemans’ exit.

Finances

Tottenham set a price-tag worth £45m earlier this summer and that’s unlikely to change, given how expensive midfield signings have been since the beginning of the window.

Insight

The young Swede isn’t as complete as Tielemans in possession, but he is arguably more effective when asked to lead the press and, combined with Manzambi, that’s not exactly a bad trait to have in an Unai Emery side.

Impact

If Spurs lose Bergvall, then it will be interesting to see whether they enter the market for another midfielder, themselves – starting the merry-go-round all over again.

It’s no secret that Bergvall wants to leave Spurs this summer. Whether Villa reach an agreement to secure his signature is another question entirely, however.

Aston Villa set to accelerate Lucas Bergvall move

As reported by TEAMtalk, Aston Villa are expected to accelerate their move for Bergvall following the departure of Tielemans.

The 20-year-old has told Tottenham that he wants to explore other opportunities this summer but their £45m asking price has so far provided an obstacle between himself and the exit door.

Now that Villa have raised funds through the sale of their own star, though, they are expected to step up their chase for the Swedish star this summer.

Aston Villa should splash out on Bergvall

Emery’s midfield seemed the most settled area. Amadou Onana, Boubacar Kamara and Tielemans provided a foundation to build around. Since the end of last season, though, Onana has suffered an ACL injury and Tielemans has headed towards the exit door – leaving Kamara as the last-man standing.

The arrival of Manzambi should help calm the storm, but Villa still need one more option and that should be Bergvall. The Spurs star is still so full of potential and makes up for his inability to replace Tielemans’ passing range with his work out of possession.

It’s also worth pointing out that Bergvall still progresses play to a high standard. He just does so through his dribbling ability – completing 62% of his take-ons last season – rather than his passing range.
