Norman Bassette arrived at Coventry City carrying plenty of promise, but his time at the CBS Arena has never quite gathered the momentum.
The Belgian striker joined the Sky Blues from French side Caen in 2024 after impressing with his potential in both France and during a successful loan spell at KV Mechelen.
Still only 19 when he signed, Bassette was viewed as another exciting young forward capable of developing into a valuable first-team player.
Breaking into Coventry’s attack, however, was never going to be straightforward. Competition for places remained fierce and regular starts proved difficult to come by.
While Bassette showed flashes of his ability with his movement, energy and willingness to press defenders, consistency was understandably harder to achieve without a sustained run in the side.
Loan spells have therefore become an important part of his development.
Time away from Coventry has allowed him to experience different leagues, different systems and the pressure that comes with fighting for minutes every week. For a young striker, those experiences can often be worth much more than staying on the bench in the Championship.
At 21, Bassette remains an intriguing prospect, and he has already represented Belgium at senior international level and possesses the physical attributes some coaches look for in a modern centre-forward.
Coventry supporters may feel frustrated that his breakthrough has not happened yet, but development is rarely straightforward for young forwards.
Westerlo open talks to sign Coventry City forward Norman Bassette
According to Sky Switzerland and Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Bassette could now be heading back to his homeland.
Tavolieri reports that Belgian Pro League side KVC Westerlo have opened discussions with Coventry over a season-long loan deal that would include an option to buy.
He also states that Bassette is attracted by the sporting project being presented by the Belgian club.
The move would appear to make sense for all parties.
From Coventry’s perspective, Bassette needs regular football above everything else. If Frank Lampard cannot guarantee him significant Championship minutes, another loan could be the smartest solution.
For Westerlo, they would be signing a young striker who already has experience in England, France and Belgium despite still being early in his career.

The option to buy would also allow the club to assess his long-term suitability before committing to a permanent transfer.
The biggest question is whether Coventry would be willing to let Bassette leave with a purchase clause attached. Young internationals rarely lose their value overnight, and the Sky Blues may believe there is still a player capable of succeeding in England.
Alternatively, if Coventry are keen to offload Bassette, it is unclear whether they’d prefer an outright sale or would be open to another loan.
