JC Wessel began his high school football career at Saint Simons Island (Ga.) Frederica Academy, a program he says has only ever churned out a few Division 1 football players.
The 6-foot-6, 235-pound tight end says he lacked exposure from college programs in the small Southeast Georgia town he grew up in. So this summer, Wessel made the move a few hours south to Jacksonville (Fla.) Bolles, one of the Sunshine State’s most prolific high school football programs.
“It kind of got to a point at my old school where I could stay and it would be good, but a lot of [college] coaches told me I needed to leave — they wanted to see me against better competition,” Wessel said.
