Crystal Palace have moved quickly in their search for a successor to Maxence Lacroix, and Chrislain Matsima has emerged as their leading target.
The 24-year-old has steadily built an impressive reputation since graduating through Monaco’s academy, where he was tipped as one of the club’s brightest defensive prospects.
Although first-team opportunities were limited at the Principality, valuable loan spells with Lorient and later Clermont Foot helped accelerate his development before he eventually made the permanent switch to Augsburg.
Matsima has established himself as a regular in the Bundesliga, using his 6ft 4in frame, recovery pace and composure on the ball to become one of Augsburg’s standout performers.
Across the last two seasons, he has made almost 50 Bundesliga appearances, contributing at both ends of the pitch while developing into one of Germany’s most highly-rated young centre-backs.

Plettenberg reports that Augsburg immediately rejected Palace’s first offer despite Matsima already reaching a ‘full agreement’ over personal terms.
The defender is keen to complete the move to England and replace Lacroix, but the Bundesliga club are expecting an improved bid ‘today’ before allowing negotiations to progress.
That response is understandable from Augsburg’s perspective.
They signed Matsima permanently after an impressive initial loan and have watched his value rise considerably thanks to his consistent Bundesliga displays.
Selling one of their most reliable defenders for an offer close to his previous transfer fee was never likely to be enough.
For Palace, though, there is every reason to remain confident.
Agreeing personal terms before finalising a fee often removes one of the biggest obstacles in a transfer, leaving the clubs to negotiate the financial package.
If Palace return with an improved offer, this still feels like a deal that has an excellent chance of reaching the finish line.
