Man Utd steal pole position for Jonathan Rowe after Aston Villa approach

Manchester United are still on the hunt for reinforcements this summer and whilst a lot of their focus has been on midfielders, they’ve also got their sights set on attacking stars like Jonathan Rowe.

It looked for a moment like Aston Villa were set for a free run at the Bologna winger, who impressed against Unai Emery‘s side in the Europa League last season. The Red Devils have since complicated things, however, and have seemingly stolen a march on their Premier League rivals.

It’s bad news for Villa, but arguably even worse news for Marcus Rashford. The England international is yet to get a move away from Old Trafford and is on course for what he hopes to be a fresh start under Michael Carrick. The arrival of a young and hungry winger like Rowe could scupper those plans.

Although it’s hard to ignore Rowe’s disciplinary issues on the pitch at times, including a red card in a recent friendly, the potential is certainly there.

At a time when the Premier League is beginning to value take-on success, his record stands out compared to someone like Rashford. The goals will likely follow soon enough for a player who is still just 23 years old.

With Champions League football to balance alongside domestic action next season, squad depth will be no bad thing, either. Whilst Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko are all likely to take a starting place, there is still plenty of room for someone with Rowe’s talent.

It’s a major blow for those in the Midlands, who could lose out on one of their top targets to a Premier League rival. The ball is now in Man United’s court, who have become the most serious suitors, as they contemplate whether to turn their interest into an offer this summer.

With Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans already through the door, those at Old Trafford have the chance to turn their focus towards their frontline for the fourth time in 12 months.

As rumours continue to surround Rashford’s future, United have the chance to sign an instant replacement in Rowe, who would be returning to English football for the first time since leaving Norwich. As for Aston Villa, they may be forced to return to the market for other options.
