Former NFL quarterback Derek Carr is going back to school.
On Monday, the UCLA Bruins announced that Carr has been hired as a special advisor to first-year coach Bob Chesney, with ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter noting the former Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints quarterback “will help … with game-planning and also work with UCLA’s quarterbacks.”
Carr unexpectedly retired from the NFL in May 2025 after 11 seasons, including his last two in New Orleans, due to a shoulder injury. During an appearance on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” last month, the 2014 draft pick discussed a possible return to the league, noting teams reached out during the offseason but that a return was far from imminent.
“I’ll be in shape and ready, but probably not,” Carr said, throwing cold water on the possibility. Joining UCLA further suggests his playing day are officially behind him.
