Former LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels took offense after the school reissued his number to sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett. That prompted the Washington Commanders star to seek legal counsel.
On Wednesday night, Daniels’ attorney sent a cease-and-desist letter, barring LSU from using his name, image and likeness. The letter said 2023 Heisman winner Daniels felt “profoundly disrespected” that the Tigers let Pickett switch from No. 3 to No. 5. The program hasn’t reissued the numbers of past Heisman winners: QB Joe Burrow (2019, No. 9) and running back Billy Cannon (1959, No. 20). LSU still isn’t conceding to the legal request.

On3’s Pete Nakos reported Thursday that LSU will let 2025 Freshman All-SEC Pickett continue wearing No. 5 this upcoming season, despite the legal threat from Daniels’ team.
Pickett began wearing the number when fall camp opened last week. When asked why he let him switch, new LSU head coach Lane Kiffin said the previous regime under Brian Kelly promised the defensive back he could don it after signing with the program in December 2024. The former five-star recruit wore No. 5 during his high school career at Zephyrhills High School in Zephyrhills, Florida.
