A new Premier League campaign is closing in and Tottenham Hotspur fans will be eagerly anticipating the emergence of a new-look side. The Lilywhites have handed Roberto De Zerbi an entire new-look backline whilst keeping hold of Micky van de Ven, and delivered two big-money midfielders.
With just over two weeks left until the summer transfer window slams shut, however, those in North London are not done just yet. Their focus is now turning towards De Zerbi’s frontline and back towards Cody Gakpo.

The Dutchman has been on their radar for the majority of the summer and with Liverpool still racing to sign Ibrahim Mbaye and Bradley Barcola, Gakpo could quickly become available.
It’s no secret that Spurs are chasing a left-winger, either. The other name on their shortlist has been Savinho and whilst he’s certainly one to watch, it’s Gakpo who would make a real difference.
The Liverpool man may have received his fair share of criticism in a tough Liverpool campaign last season, but the numbers suggest the extent of that criticism was harsh at Anfield.
Gakpo ended last season with nine goals and six assists. That would have made him one of the best performers in Tottenham’s frontline. For the right price, he would be an addition that guarantees goal involvement for De Zerbi’s side – something they still lack ahead of the new season.
As the transfer window continues to tick away, those in North London are now stepping up their move. According to Dutch journalist Joost Blaauwhof, Tottenham have made ‘formal’ contact to sign Gakpo and the winger is open to leaving the Anfield club before the end of the summer.
It’s a key boost for the Lilywhites, who are simply waiting to pounce as soon as they get the green light from Liverpool. That may arrive sooner rather than later too, as the Reds go in pursuit of Barcola and Mbaye. The arrival of the Paris Saint-Germain duo would make Gakpo surplus to requirements just over a year since he played a key part in Liverpool’s Premier League title win under former manager Arne Slot.
It was in that same campaign that the Dutchman earned praise from former Liverpool player Joe Cole, as Liverpool edged past Crystal Palace on their way to glory.
“It wasn’t his whole performance, Gakpo, in particular, I thought was excellent today. But right at the death when they were under the cosh a little bit, the ball’s come up to him, he’s brought it down, he’s broken the lines, he’s gone past somebody, and he won a corner. He does everything.”
If Gakpo could find that form at Tottenham, then De Zerbi would have the game changer that he’s been searching for all summer long. In one move, those in North London could solve their one remaining problem.
