Despite the ongoing uncertainty with no general manager in place in Detroit and Simon Edvinsson still unsigned, it’s looking more and more like Dylan Larkin will be in the lineup when the puck drops. A holdout seems unlikely at this point – it wouldn’t really boost his trade value, and Larkin probably isn’t eager to sit out and lose pay.

Meanwhile, the Washington Capitals are working to lock up two of their young forwards before the season starts. Ryan Leonard and Justin Sourdif are both pending RFAs, and GM Chris Patrick says talks are underway with both.

A Dylan Larkin holdout is unlikely, and a return won’t be easy for him

Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now: Training camp is drawing nearer. The Detroit Red Wings remain without a GM. Simon Edvinsson remains unsigned, an RFA, and is one piece of business that needs to get completed.

The closer camp gets, the more likely it seems that Dylan Larkin will remain with the team, at least for now. Holding out is an unlikely course of action for the forward. It wouldn’t generate more trade interest in him, and he may not be interested in foregoing his salary while he sat out.

There are plenty of fans who will show their displeasure if he returns to the Red Wings lineup, but it will likely be something he’ll have to live with.

The Washington Capitals are having extension talks with Ryan Leonard and Justin Sourdif

Tom Gulitti of NHLRumors.com: Washington Capitals forward Ryan Leonard is eligible for a contract extension, and the sides have started talks. Leonard would be an RFA after the season, and susceptible to an offer sheet. Capitals GM Chris Patrick on Tuesday.

“Yeah, we’ve had some discussions this summer. I’m hopeful we can continue to have some discussions here. That’s not something that I want to let play out. I’d rather get something done if we can, if it makes sense for both sides, because I do think what happened this past summer is definitely potentially a harbinger of things to come in the League. So, I’d like to have something done sooner than later with him if it works for their side.”

Patrick isn’t sure if they’ll get a deal done by the start of the season, but hopes they will.

Forward Justin Sourdif is another pending RFA that is extension eligible, and like Leonard, talks have started.
