Jireh Edwards, once of the most talked about freshmen at Alabama this offseason, suffered an arm injury that will require surgery.
The school’s NIL entity, Yea Alabama, wrote about the injury, which occurred during practice on Monday and is said to not be considered season-ending.
A former four-star prospect from Maryland, Edwards was the No. 2-ranked safety in the 2026 Class, according to 247Sports. He enrolled early at UA, participating in spring practice.
His physical stature at 6-foot-2 and 218 pounds has stood out for a freshman defensive back.
Just last week, defensive coordinator Kane Wommack called Edwards “one of the most instinctive playmakers I’ve ever seen coming out of high school.”
“Very physical,” Wommack said. “He’s got phenomenal tracking of the ball. His blitz IQ and awareness is really high, and so he can create production out of that package as well. Really, for him, it’s about putting the whole thing together. Jireh’s going to play for us, but how much does he play for us early in the season and in what situations? Those are the question marks we’ve really challenged him in like, can you put everything together that we can throw you out there on any given down? And he’s still working towards that.”
Alabama’s safety room remains deep with both starters, Keon Sabb and Bray Hubbard, back, along with experienced reserves Zay Mincey, Ivan Taylor and Dre Kirkpatrick Jr.
Another freshman, former five-star cornerback Jorden Edmonds, recently sustained a lower-body injury that will cause him to miss time as well.
Alabama opens the season at home vs. East Carolina on Sept. 5.
