West Bromwich Albion have been charged with an alleged breach of the EFL’s P&S rules, and Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett has now dropped a major update on the timing of any potential punishment.

West Brom in danger after Portsmouth defeat Ipswich

The Championship relegation battle took a fresh twist on Wednesday night, with Portsmouth running out 2-1 winners against promotion-chasing Ipswich Town at Fratton Park, which moves them four points clear of the bottom three.

West Brom, on the other hand, are fighting for their lives, sitting just two points above the relegation zone, despite James Morrison making his side much more difficult to beat since being appointed as manager until the end of the season at the beginning of March.

As things stand, however, a two-point cushion might not be enough for Albion, with it being reported they are in line to receive a three-point penalty, should they be found guilty of breaking the EFL’s P&S rules.

In the same report, it was suggested the Baggies may not receive their punishment until after the season includes, which would, of course, have a major bearing on the relegation battle, as the surrounding teams wouldn’t know how many points they need to stay up.

However, Dorsett has now dropped a significant update, in a report for Sky Sports, which makes it clear that a decision is expected sooner rather than later, in order to preserve the integrity of the competition.

“It is possible, but very unlikely I am told, that the punishment will be decided after the final games of the Championship season, with all parties pushing hard for a resolution as soon as possible.”

Dorsett also confirms he’s been told West Brom’s breach is ‘marginal’ rather than ‘flagrant’, which means if a points deducition is forthcoming, it could be more lenient than the six-point penalty Leicester City received earlier this season.

Kevin Phillips backs James Morrison for permanent job

Having taken 11 points from his first eight games in charge, Morrison could still keep the Baggies up, regardless of whether they receive a points deduction, and former striker Kevin Phillips has now backed him to land the job on a permanent basis.

Phillips said: “I’d love to see him get the job permanently. He’s come in, and he’s done an excellent job. Of course, a relegation scrap, but they’re in a good position. James has shown that he can handle the pressure.

“I know the player, I played with him,” he added. “I would love to see him given the opportunity, but I just fear that the club might go for someone a bit more experienced, but they’ve already tried that.

“So why not? I’d love to see James (get it). The fans love him. I’d love to see him given a crack at it next season for sure.”
