Coventry City could make a summer move for Sheffield United star Gustavo Hamer, as they look to bring in players capable of keeping them in the Premier League.
What Frank Lampard has says about Coventry’s promotion
Coventry’s Premier League exile is finally set to come to an end, with Bobby Thomas sealing promotion after equalising at Blackburn Rovers, and an emotional Frank Lampard went on to tip his hat to the fans and predecessor Mark Robins.
He said: “I was happy with that one (the equaliser). This is a special night for the football club, which is bigger than all of us.
“It can never be more clear when you see the fans at the end of the game. A club that’s suffered for 25 years in terms of since they’ve been in the Premier League and that journey going down to League Two.
“Credit to everyone involved in those tough years. Mark Robins, of course, he has to have a shout out. But it’s a massive, massive achievement from everyone involved and it’s really special.”
Coventry’s summer transfer targets
The Sky Blues have wasted little time when it comes to identifying summer transfer targets, and they are planning to strengthen the squad in a number of key positions, including central midfield.
Evidently, Lampard is keen on raiding former club Chelsea for some of their up-and-coming talents, but there is also a desire to bring in players with a little more experience.
That is according to former scout Mick Brown, who revealed Coventry are expected to make a move for Sheffield United star Hamer, in an interview with Football Insider.
“Coventry will be looking at the best players in the Championship who might be able to make that step up into the Premier League with them. Hamer is definitely among them and he’s shown that over a number of years.
“They still rate him very highly at Coventry and the fans loved him when he was there, so it would make sense for both parties if he was to make a return.
“I expect it’s something they will both be interested in doing if it’s possible, because he has got the quality at his best to make them into a better team.”
The midfielder, who rakes in £30k-a-week, and has been compared to England legend Paul Gascoigne by former defender Paul Parker, is expected to leave Sheffield United in the summer, after three impressive seasons at Bramall Lane, picking up 21 goals and 28 assists in 120 appearances.
Hamer also registered 19 goals and 24 assists in 132 matches during his previous stint with the Sky Blues from 2020 – 2024, and he has been lauded as “outrageous” by writer Danny Hall.
If Lampard leaves: Coventry City could hire a Premier League “legend”
