Ipswich Town are readying an opening offer for Club Brugge forward Mamadou Diakhon, as they want to make a game-changing signing ahead of a potential return to the Premier League.
Kieran McKenna‘s side are on the brink of sealing promotion from the Championship, but the job isn’t done just yet, after drawing 2-2 against Southampton at St. Mary’s on Tuesday night.
It is in the Tractor Boys’ hands, but they are just one point clear of Millwall and two ahead of Middlesbrough with one game left to play, namely a home match against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.
What Kieran McKenna said after draw at Southampton
Although his side weren’t quite able to get over the line, McKenna was happy with his side’s performance, saying: “It’s been hard work but I didn’t see a toll tonight, it was an outstanding game of football and I’m so proud of the performance.
“Credit to Southampton for their input to the game and I think when you produce a performance like against one of the form teams in the country that you can say we’re in a brilliant way. We’d have loved to of finished it off tonight and we were millimetres away but we look forward to Saturday with a lot of confidence.”
Ipswich are edging ever closer, but McKenna knows all too well he will need to improve his squad in the summer, having suffered relegation from the Premier League last season.
Ipswich preparing opening bid for Mamadou Diakhon
According to a report from Sports Boom, Ipswich are now preparing an opening bid of €10m – €12m (£9m – £10m) for Club Brugge star Diakhon, as they are looking to make a game-changing signing this summer.
Interest in a new winger stems from the fact Jaden Philogene is likely to move on in the summer, even if the goal of promotion to the Premier League is achieved.
Everton and Crystal Palace have also identified the 20-year-old as a top target, off the back of his impressive performances in the Belgian Pro League this season.
The one-cap Senegal international has seven assists to his name, the joint-fourth highest in the division, despite making just 20 appearances, which is fewer than any other player in the top ten.
Club Brugge took part in the Champions League this season, and the Strasbourg-born winger collected two goals and two assists in nine matches, putting on a show in a 3-3 draw against semi-finalists Atletico Madrid by making three key passes and setting up the second goal.
