Manchester United fans will often debate who the best player to ever wear their famous red shirt – but countless players are certainly in with a shout for that honour.
Sir Bobby Charlton and Cristiano Ronaldo are just two talents who have captured the hearts of the fanbase at Old Trafford – with the latter even winning a Balon d’Or in Manchester.
However, Wayne Rooney is a player who hasn’t received the flowers he deserved for his 13 years as a first-team player under Sir Alex Ferguson’s guidance.
He arrived as a babyfaced teenager back in 2004, but by the time he departed in 2017, he had established himself as one of the club’s and country’s best ever attacking stars.
No player has registered more combined goals and assists in the Premier League, whilst also being the club’s all-time scorer – but is there any chance the hierarchy can land their own version this summer?

Man Utd make £90m Premier League star their top transfer target
In recent weeks, United have turned their transfer attention back to players starring in the Premier League to help bolster their chances of claiming top-division glory next term.
Nottingham Forest Morgan Gibbs-White has emerged as just one target for the Red Devils at present, amid his phenomenal form at the City Ground.
The England international now has five goals and an assist in his last three games across all competitions – but any deal could cost upwards of £70m this summer.
He’s not the only English star currently in the hierarchy’s sights, with Aston Villa attacker Morgan Rogers another who’s constantly touted with a move to Old Trafford.
According to Italian outlet Gazzetta, the Red Devils have made the 23-year-old their top transfer target for when the transfer window opens at the start of June.
The report also states that the Villa star is expected to be pursued by the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea, which could lead to a tug of war for his services in the months ahead.
Any deal would certainly cost a pretty penny for INEOS, as Unai Emery’s men have said it would take an offer in the region of £90m to sell their star man this summer.
Previous reports have indicated that the England international is actually open to heading to Old Trafford in the forthcoming months.
Why Rogers would be United’s next Rooney
The United fanbase will no doubt be excited by the prospect of a huge transfer window this summer, but they know too well that money doesn’t equal success.
£200m was spent last summer alone by Ruben Amorim, subsequently adding to the £600m previously splashed out by the previous boss Erik ten Hag.

The likes of Antony, Rasmus Hojlund and Jadon Sancho all cost upwards of £60m each, but none of the aforementioned stars will be on the books by the end of the season.
Last summer’s window has provided fresh hope that the board can get it right in making big-money additions – something which will be judged in the months ahead.
A deal for Rogers would be the second biggest in the club’s impressive history, but it could allow the Red Devils to have their next version of fan-favourite Rooney.
He would emulate his compatriot in starring at Old Trafford at a young age, whilst also arriving in Manchester from a side lower-down the Premier League.
He’s already been compared to the club’s record goalscorer by iconic star Glenn Hoddle, who stated: “I thought he was excellent, he has that little bit of guile about him.
“That turn of pace, my word, for his age, he has that body strength possibly like a Wayne Rooney when he was really young, he won’t get knocked off the ball and he believes in his own ability,”
His figures from the ongoing campaign demonstrates the quality he possesses, with many of his attributes comparable to those of the former United sensation.
Rogers, who’s been dubbed “world-class” by journalist Graeme Bailey, has registered 20 combined goals and assists across all competitions this his term.
Many of his 12 goals this season have been phenomenal individual efforts – something the Red Devils fans have seen twice at Villa Park earlier this term.
He’s also registered a 40% shot on target accuracy rate in the Premier League this season, whilst also outperforming his xG – highlighting his clinical nature, just like Rooney.
His ability to get out of tight spaces and create carnage also must be credited, with the Villa star completing 1.2 successful dribbles per 90 and creating 1.3 chances per 90.
Both of the aforementioned figures would be music to the ears of Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo, who could bolster their own goalscoring tallies at Old Trafford.
Rogers still has a long way to go before he reaches the levels produced by Rooney in England’s top-flight, but there’s no reason why he can’t emulate his success upon any move.
It would be a huge investment from INEOS this summer, but it’s a transfer that would hand them the added attacking threat they have been craving in recent weeks.

INEOS are now plotting a move to sign their own Wayne Rooney in the form of an impressive Premier League teenager.
