Are we approaching the final stretch of this chapter at Liverpool?

FSG have made it clear over the past few months that they are putting their faith behind the under-fire head coach, who still hasn’t qualified for the Champions League, into the final week of of the Premier League season.

This has been a staggering fall-off, beyond anything that even the most hopeful of rivals would have hoped for as Liverpool started their title defence last August.

The standards have been well off throughout, with even the thrilling last-gasp winners at the start of the season proving little more than veneers to cover over deep and concerning issues that were pinpointed from the get-go.

Something needs to give, and FSG may finally be swallowing their pride and preparing to make a change in the dugout.

Liverpool considering Slot sack

With Xabi Alonso preparing to take over at Chelsea at the end of the season, a bitter taste has been left in the mouths of Liverpool supporters who have been forced to watch slow, laboured, uncertain football for an entire year.

Slot may feel that a transfer window could do a lot for this team, but the fundamentals are so far out of kilter that sticking with the head coach, who has led Liverpool to 20 defeats in all competitions this season, including the Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace, would be an even bigger gamble.

Alas, TEAMtalk are reporting that FSG are finally turning to the notion that they may need to replace Slot ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, and while Alonso is no longer on the table, it’s believed that FSG are internally discussing Stuttgart boss Sebastian Hoeness with the 44-year-old one of the managers the club have ‘looked’ at.

Hoeness has worked wonders in his German homeland, bringing the kind of style that fans have been hungering for at Anfield this year.

Back in March, it was first reported that he had become a key contender to succeed Slot, should FSG have decided to consider the Dutchman’s future.

Now, with Liverpool having failed to improve all year, it looks like change may be on the horizon, with Hoeness potentially having an air of Luis Enrique about him too.

Why Hoeness can be Liverpool’s own Luis Enrique

It should go without saying that Hoeness and Enrique are on opposite ends of the managerial spectrum, and while Liverpool are interested in appointing the Paris Saint-Germain boss, it might be a tad difficult to get that one over the line.

Luis Enrique titles won (timeless)

Enrique, after all, is the cream of the crop right now. As PSG look to secure a new contract for the Spaniard, any Liverpool move to secure his services would come with astronomical wages attached.

Still, Hoeness is “one of the best young coaches in Europe“, according to talent scout Jacek Kulig, and he is quickly asserting himself for a Stuttgart side who have secured passage into Europe multiple times in recent years, winning the DFB-Pokal last season.

Some might feel that Hoeness is the natural Jurgen Klopp successor at Liverpool, but in truth, his playing style differs from his legendary countryman’s. “The first name is always Pep [Guardiola]“, he said, marvelling at the Manchester City manager’s innovation and control in possession when he led Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.

But for Liverpool, Hoeness would likely bring more “controlled chaos” and aggression, as have become staples of his methods with RB Leipzig and now Stuttgart. He implements a 4-2-3-1 formation that shifts and shimmies depending on the situation

Hoeness’ tactical adaptability and emphasis on attacking football could see him emerge as Liverpool’s own version of Enrique, one who would not require an astronomical sum to bring over to Anfield.

Bundesliga commentator Kevin Hatchard in 2025 that Hoeness had shaped Stuttgart into an “incredible” team, improving so many players and securing silverware.

This has been the key trigger point for Enrique’s success in Paris, finally unifying PSG and finally establishing them as the best team in the world.

Could Hoeness do the same at Liverpool? He has all the attributes, and a style that Anfield would embrace.
