IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) has named former Tulane guard Jackson Johnson as its new head basketball coach, according to media reports.
Johnson had coached Newman (Boston, Mass.) in the NEPSAC for the past four seasons and leaves to take the Ascenders job, according to a story in the New England Basketball Journal.
He takes over for Sean McAloon, who had been at IMG since 2017 and was 193-60 in that stretch. The Ascenders finished 20-9 last season but weren’t ranked in the National Top 10. They fielded a senior-heavy team with Aziz Olajuwon among the seven seniors on the squad.
At Newman, Johnson led the Cardinals to a 108-49 mark, going 69-12 over the last two seasons. After winning their second straight NEPSAC Class AAA championship, the Cardinals capped their 38-win year with a 92-72 win over Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.) in the national prep championship in this March.
Johnson played high school basketball at Ponte Vedra (Fla.), averaging 16.9 points and 6.9 assists per night as a senior in 2013-14. He scored more than 1,400 points and was the school’s all-time assist and steals leader. He played collegiately at Tulane and Augusta College.
