Rangers could see £4m bid accepted to sign new striker

Glasgow Rangers are poised to make a big addition to Danny Rohl‘s playing squad in the form of Scotland international Lawrence Shankland.

The Hearts star and captain is set to officially complete a move to Ibrox before he jets away for the World Cup with his country this summer, signing a three-year deal with the club.

He is set to join the Light Blues on a free transfer thanks to a clause in the contract extension that he signed with the Jam Tarts in the summer transfer window of 2025.

Shankland scored 16 goals in 29 appearances in the Scottish Premiership for the Jam Tarts this season, leading them to second place, and outscored all of Rangers’ players in the division.

Portugal U21 international Youssef Chermiti was the club’s top goalscorer in the league, with 15 goals, and that included hat-tricks against Hearts and Falkirk.

Shankland is a proven Premiership goalscorer and a natural leader, as he is the captain at Hearts, which is why he could be a brilliant signing for Rohl’s side.

However, Rohl and the recruitment team could do one better by moving for another Premiership star who is even better than the Jam Tarts skipper.

It was reported earlier this month that Rangers are one of the sides preparing a potential bid to sign Tawanda Maswanhise from Motherwell in the summer transfer window.

The Scottish Sun are now reporting that Motherwell are prepared to demand a fee of £4m for the former Leicester City academy prospect, which means that the Gers could see a £4m bid accepted for his services.

It adds, though, that Belgian giants Anderlecht are also keen on a deal for the 23-year-old marksman, after they had an initial offer of £3m turned down for him in the January transfer window earlier this year.

Even though they are closing in on a move for Shankland, Rangers must also put a bid in for Maswanhise to add him to Rohl’s squad for next season’s title charge.

Why Tawanda Maswanhise is even better than Lawrence Shankland

The Zimbabwe international is even better than the Hearts captain and could be a more influential signing for the Ibrox giants in the short-term, as well as the long-term.

He is seven years younger than Shankland, at 23 years old, and could have far more to offer in the long run, as he is still heading towards the peak of his career, rather than heading towards the end of it.

In the short-term, Maswanhise may also have a bigger impact in front of goal after he outscored the Scottish striker, despite playing for a Motherwell side that finished two places lower than Hearts in the table.

The £4m-rated star, who scored 22 goals in all competitions for ‘Well, won the Golden Boot in the Premiership, making him officially the best goalscorer in Scotland at the moment.

He could be an even better signing than Shankland, therefore, because he offers a similar, and possibly greater, threat in front of goal, whilst having seven years on the incoming Rangers signing.

Maswanhise also has more to his all-round game than the Scotland international because he is a mobile forward, who can also play out wide, and can offer qualities that Shankland is unable to.

For example, the Motherwell star only lost possession 9.2 times per game in the league this season, whilst the Hearts ace lost the ball 13.1 times per match, showing that he was not as sharp on the ball.

The fact that Maswanhise averaged almost twice as many completed dribbles per game (0.9) than Shankland (0.5) also speaks to his superior physicality and mobility, which could make him more effective in the bigger game where there is more space on the counter.

Therefore, the Gers should push to get a deal done for the £4m-rated star in the coming weeks after they sign Shankland, as he would be an even more impressive addition to their squad.

Celtic have also been linked with the Zimbabwe international and moving to beat them to his signature would come as a boost to Rangers and a blow for their title rivals this summer.
