Tottenham Hotspur have now held talks to sign an “absolutely sensational” forward, with former manager Harry Redknapp a keen admirer.
Spurs eager to strengthen attack after bolstering backline
Tottenham have moved swiftly to improve their defence, and they have done so without breaking the bank, securing the signings of Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson on free transfers.
Both Senesi and Robertson are experienced in the Premier League, joining from AFC Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively, with Roberto De Zerbi looking to rebuild his defence, given that Cristian Romero could be set to leave, alongside Radu Dragusin.
Signing a new centre-back remains on the to-do list for ENIC, with Spurs advancing to sign Brighton star Jan Paul van Hecke, who, of course, worked with De Zerbi during the Italian’s time at the American Express Stadium.
With Romero and Dragusin in line to depart, it is no surprise the north Londoners have set out to strengthen their defence as a priority, but they are also keen on improving their forward line, and they have been presented with the opportunity to sign another player on a free transfer.
Tottenham hold talks to sign “absolutely sensational” striker
That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, which reveals Tottenham have been informed about Darwin Nunez’s availability, with the former Liverpool striker, who joined Al-Hilal in a £46m deal last summer, now set to leave the Saudi Pro League side.
Nunez’s time in Saudi Arabia clearly hasn’t gone to plan, as he has agreed a mutual termination of his contract, which opens the door for a move back to Europe, and a whole host of top clubs have been contacted about a potential deal.
At the moment, the Lilywhites are ‘monitoring developments’, which suggests their interest isn’t advanced, but snapping the Uruguayan up on a free transfer could be an exciting prospect.
Liverpool’s willingness to cash-in on Nunez suggests he didn’t meet expectations at Anfield, but he still maintained a decent record in front of goal, and played a role in the Reds lifting three trophies.
Darwin Nunez’s Liverpool statistics
- 143 matches
- 40 goals
- 26 assists
- Won the Premier League, League Cup and Community Shield
Inconsistency was perhaps the Uruguayan’s biggest problem, with Newcastle United writer Charlie Bennett saying: “Darwin Nunez is either absolutely sensational or a total car crash. The most erratic player in the Premier League.”
Redknapp is a big fan of the striker too, saying: “I love watching big Darwin Nunez, he’s so involved in the game. He misses some chances, but his movement means he gets so many.”
Tottenham may need to improve their attacking options this summer, given that two defenders ranked in their top five goalscorers in the Premier League last season, and Nunez’s availability on a free transfer could make him a solid option.
