Before he’s even had the chance to take charge of a full season, Danny Rohl could be heading for the exit door at Rangers, with Red Bull Salzburg making their move.

His reign has split opinions so far at Ibrox, but even the most pessimistic fan cannot deny how much a managerial change could disrupt the 49ers project so soon after Russell Martin’s tenure and Rohl’s arrival.

Salzburg pushing to appoint Rohl

It’s a disastrous scenario for the Gers, who only turned to Rohl to replace Martin after they missed out on Steven Gerrard. And for all the disappointing results, Rangers still showed plenty of potential at times last season.

To rip that up and start all over again would only delay the arrival of silverware at Ibrox, but that’s no problem for Red Bull. According to Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg, Salzburg are now pushing to hire Rohl and are in direct contact with Rangers over a move for the manager.

It may be a tough gig for Rohl to turn down, too. It wasn’t so long ago that he was learning his trade at Red Bull and he can reportedly see himself returning. They gave him his managerial wings which have since flown to Scotland.

If Rangers are forced to hire a third manager in the space of one year, then it would create serious questions for those in charge at Ibrox. What is meant to be a long-term project has already featured far too many short-term changes.

This time around, however, they could have no choice but to return to square one and back into talks with a manager who has teased an arrival in Scotland for quite some time.

Rangers could hire serial winner to replace Rohl

The good part about a potential managerial change so soon after the last is that Rangers’ list of candidates should be well up to date. It could even see them recommence talks with a previous candidate in Kevin Muscat.

The Shanghai Port manager looked likely to replace Martin before choosing to stay put in China. Since then, though, it’s been a disappointing campaign for his side in the Chinese Super League and they’re on course to finish mid-table just one year after becoming champions.

It could hand Rangers hope that Muscat would approve another chance to take charge at Ibrox. Whether they test that theory out remains to be seen, however.

“I just think the style that he plays, similar to Postecoglou, obviously worked under him. We know it works in the Premiership. I think he’s someone who could take a squad and get the most out of it.” Daily Record’s Gavin Berry

It’s easy to see why Rangers have targeted Muscat in the past. He’s won everywhere he has managed, picking up eight trophies in spells in China, Australia and Japan. Now, Scotland could be next.

He’d also need little introduction to Ibrox, having featured for Rangers as a player, and could guarantee exciting football after comparisons with successful former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou.

Losing Rohl would set the 49ers back, but if it leads to the arrival of Muscat, then it could be the ultimate blessing in disguise for the Gers.
