Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have now received a major boost in the race to sign an impressive defender, who could be on the move this summer.

The Lilywhites have got a particular focus on their backline ahead of next season following another disastrous campaign which saw them flirt all too much with the relegation zone.

They’ve already moved quickly to welcome both Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, with the two free agents putting pen to paper to hand the club a bargain double deal.

Welcoming Senesi with open arms, Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi told the club’s official website: “Marcos’ experience, quality on the ball, and competitive edge will strengthen us defensively, as well as giving us flexibility in formation.

“He’s comfortable playing in a possession-based team, reads the game very well and has the personality to thrive in a demanding environment.”

Even after welcoming Senesi, however, Spurs aren’t done there with defensive reinforcements. Reports are now suggesting that they could yet sign another centre-back, especially as rumours persist over Brighton’s pursuit of Luka Vuskovic and the Seagulls’ stubbornness over Jan Paul van Hecke.

Tottenham and Liverpool gifted green light for defender

As reported by Caught Offside, Tottenham and Liverpool have now got the green light to bid for Joel Ordonez if they match Club Brugge’s €45m (£37m) asking price.

Although the Belgian club are reluctant to lose their defender, there is an acceptance that such an offer would be too good to turn down in the coming months – handing the Premier League duo a huge boost.

For Liverpool, it’s the chance to replace Ibrahima Konate following his departure as a free agent. They’ve already got Jeremy Jacquet on the way, but could do with an additional option. Alas, as things stand, it is not the Reds in pole position.

Reports have revealed that Tottenham are leading the race to sign Ordonez and could spend big for the first time this summer to welcome the 22-year-old.

In terms of cheaper alternatives, Ordonez wouldn’t be a bad option to turn to this summer. If Spurs are willing to splash out, though, then it’s clear that Van Hecke should be their top option. With the conditions for both deals already outlined, those in North London have a huge decision to make.
