Aston Villa supporters must have enjoyed seeing Morgan Rogers produce an impressive cameo off the bench for England against Croatia at the World Cup earlier this week.

The attacking midfielder came off the bench to create two chances and one ‘big chance’ for his side in a 4-2 win over Croatia in the first game of the group stage for the Three Lions.

Whilst he did not earn a starting berth, with Jude Bellingham picked ahead of him, the 23-year-old star can still be pleased with his contribution to the result as a substitute.

With a win already on the board and games against Ghana and Panama to come next week, Rogers has a good chance of starting a World Cup game this month.

It will be no surprise to Villa supporters if he shines as a starter at the tournament, because of what he produced for Unai Emery‘s side in recent seasons.

Aston Villa in talks to sign Premier League forward

Rogers racked up 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions for the club, including ten goals and six assists in the Premier League, and significantly outperformed his xG of 9.44.

Now, Emery and the recruitment team are pursuing a player who could arrive at Villa Park as the manager’s next version of the England international in the off-season.

Morgan-Rogers-Villa

According to the Daily Mail, Aston Villa are one of a number of teams interested in a deal to sign Harry Wilson from Fulham in the summer transfer window.

The report claims that the Villans have made an approach to open talks with the Wales international, who is due to become a free agent at the end of the month.

It adds, though, that Everton have also made contact with the 29-year-old star and Leeds United are also eyeing up a move for the winger to bolster their squad.

Villa must, now, hope that the fact that they have Champions League football to offer will be enough to convince him to turn down the Toffees and the Whites this summer.

Harry Wilson could be Aston Villa’s next Morgan Rogers

Wilson would be a fantastic signing for the Villans to add more consistency and quality to their attack, as he could be Emery’s next version of Rogers, but on the right wing.

Jadon Sancho only scored one goal in 39 appearances in all competitions during his loan spell from Manchester United in the 2025/26 campaign, failing to score in all 23 of his matches in the Premier League.

Wilson, meanwhile, scored 11 goals and provided eight assists in 41 appearances in all competitions for the Cottagers, scoring ten times in the Premier League for his club.

Highest xG overperformance in 25/26 PL
Player xG overperformance
Junior Kroupi +4.08
Harry Wilson +3.93
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall +3.68
Ryan Gravenberch +3.46
Morgan Rogers +2.86

What made the Welsh star’s output particularly impressive was that he did not need loads of high-quality chances to find the back of the net, as he had the second-highest xG overperformance in the division, scoring ten goals from 6.07 xG.

Rogers was also among the top five players who overperformed their xG by the most in the Premier League, and that is because both players have the quality to score outstanding goals.

Fulham-Harry-Wilson

Villa fans know exactly what sort of goals Rogers is capable of scoring, as he has shown time and time again that he is capable of the spectacular, and Wilson is a similar type of forward.

His collection of goals for Fulham in the Premier League last season is evidence of his ability to score great goals, on top of his impressive xG differential.

This means that Emery would have another game-changing star if the club can sign Wilson on a free transfer, which is what they will need to compete in the Premier League and the Champions League.

The beauty of having players like Rogers and Wilson who can score goals out of nothing is that a poor team performance or a strong defensive showing from the opposition does not mean the end of the world.

They are both players who can turn a poor performance into a positive result with one moment of magic to change a game, which is why having both of them in the same team could be a joy to watch for Villa supporters next term.
