A year ago, Tottenham Hotspur signed Mohammed Kudus for a fee of £55m. It was one of a few marquee deals Spurs were able to get over the line.

Yet, rather typically of how the campaign played out, the exciting attacker spent must of his debut year on the treatment table.

You name them, they got injured last season. Kudus was another long-term absentee alongside the likes of Dejan Kulusveski and James Maddison.

To lose that amount of creativity is rather astonishing. Is it any wonder that the Lilywhites found themselves towards the bottom end of the table?

Regardless of those injuries, however, they should never have been down there.

Kudus is currently absent from the World Cup with Ghana but there is a hope that he will be ready and waiting to start on the first day of the 2026/27 season. He could be joined by another exciting winger in the starting XI.

Spurs ramping up plans to sign a new winger

Much of the chatter over the recent week has revolved around midfielders coming into Tottenham.

Spurs are chasing two huge additions in the form of West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali. A move for Tonali is believed to be advancing with the player having reportedly already agreed a £275k-per-week contract to move to north London.

Yet, Roberto De Zerbi and Co must not forget about the flanks. In that regard, they have considered another raid of West Ham to land Crysencio Summerville while an ambitious move for Marcus Rashford is also being explored. Savinho of Manchester City is a primary target too and talks are underway on that one.

Talks are also in play for Cody Gakpo at Liverpool. That’s according to TEAMtalk who report the latest on the Dutchman’s future at Anfield this week.

Reporter Graeme Bailey notes that Spurs are already in club-to-club discussions over a move for the Netherlands international as they weigh up whether to sign him instead of Savinho.

Gakpo has been discussed at length by De Zerbi and the club’s recruitment team and is said to be a player of keen interest.

Tottenham are speaking to Liverpool as they aim to seek clarity on the winger’s future. It’s noted that he has concerns over his long-term place in Merseyside due to the emergence of teenager Rio Ngumoha.

Previous reports have outlined that Spurs could be prepared to pay around £73m to secure his signature.

How Cody Gakpo compares to Mohammed Kudus

It was a huge shame that Kudus missed the majority of the second half of the season through injury. He has started life at Tottenham in some style.

Even though the numbers are not mindblowing – he scored three goals and assisted six in 26 matches – the Ghana winger was a lot more electric than that suggests.

What the former West Ham man brings to the team is a dazzling ability to evade opponents and get away from his marker. Last term, the 25-year-old ranked among the best 5% of positionally similar players in Europe’s top five leagues for successful dribbles per 90 minutes with a whopping 3.03.

Spurs fans may not be too keen on the idea of Gakpo joining but he is a proven Premier League talent and if it is goals they are seeking, the Dutchman would be a better option than Savinho.

During Liverpool’s title-winning campaign of 2024/25, the attacker netted 18 times in all competitions to rubberstamp his credentials as a prolific wide player.

While the 27-year-old did only bag nine times in 2025/26, he was still dangerous and like Kudus, is a real menace in one v one situations.

The fact is that Gakpo, like Kudus, would be a player capable of getting Spurs up the pitch quicker and more effectively. When it comes to carrying the ball – one of the Ghanaian’s strengths – they are very similar.

As a result, the thought of the two players featuring on the opposing flanks of each other is a truly exciting prospect.

Sure, another option in Rashford may be more proven. He may well have scored 30 goals in one season for Manchester United once upon a time. Yet, Gakpo is not a bad player at all. There is a reason he played such an important part in Liverpool’s Premier League title win only a year ago.
