After securing survival in the Premier League last season, the instruction for Leeds United this summer is clear – add quality over quantity to the first-team squad.

Daniel Farke’s men demonstrated they are capable of upsetting some of the biggest sides in the division, but now it’s about competing with them on a regular basis.

A push towards European football must be the goal ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, with the recent transfer links highlighting the calibre of player the 49ers are targeting this window.

The likes of Ousmane Diomande and Loïs Openda have both been touted with moves to Elland Road – two players who have featured in the Champions League in recent seasons.

The Whites also appear to have struck an agreement for the free transfer signing of departing Fulham star, Harry Wilson, the 29-year-old set to join the growing Welsh contingent in Yorkshire.

Wilson’s imminent arrival could just be the start of things, however, as the recruitment drive appears to now be in full flow, with numerous other proven top-level talents having appeared on the radar over the last few days.

Leeds prepare bid to sign £8m talent this summer

In an attempt to bolster various areas of the senior ranks, Leeds have recently ramped up deals for a whole host of players – including Southampton midfielder Shea Charles.

Farke’s men have already had a £20m offer rejected for the highly-rated 22-year-old, who made 31 appearances in England’s second tier last campaign.

Their efforts don’t appear to have been successful in recent days, but it’s reported that a new offer is expected to be presented for the youngster in the coming weeks.

However, Charles isn’t the only player who could be the subject of a fresh proposal, as Borussia Mönchengladbach centre-back Nico Elvedi has once again appeared on their radar.

According to Football Insider, Leeds are said to be preparing an offer to sign the 29-year-old, who’s currently representing Switzerland at the ongoing World Cup.

The report states that the player himself would be open to a move to Yorkshire this summer after previously playing under Farke during his time in charge of the Bundesliga side.

Other outlets have also confirmed the Whites’ interest in landing the centre-back, leading to an £8m fee being mooted to secure his services this summer.

Why Elvedi would be a better signing than Charles for Leeds

The reported interest from numerous Premier League clubs in midfielder Charles undoubtedly highlights that he’s a player capable of making the step-up in divisions.

Despite featuring in the second tier last term, he did have key experience facing off against multiple sides from England’s top-flight during the Saints’ FA Cup run.

The Northern Irish international netted the winning goal against eventual Premier League winners Arsenal, subsequently highlighting his all-round quality despite his defensive role.

However, after having a £20m offer rejected in recent days, it’s now unclear as to how much Tonder Ekert’s side could demand to offload the 22-year-old star.

Whilst he would offer a youthful option to the midfield department, a move for Elvedi would undoubtedly be a bigger coup for Farke and Leeds this window.

The Swiss international has been a consistent performer on the national stage over recent years – subsequently amassing a staggering 69 caps for his country.

He’s also spent the last 11 years in the Bundesliga, whilst featuring 22 times in European competitions – highlighting his ability to star at the top level on a consistent basis.

Such quality is what’s needed at Elland Road this summer, especially if the Whites are to build on 2025/26 and reach the next level under Farke’s guidance.

His switch to a back three during the recent campaign saw the likes of Joe Rodon, Jaka Bijol and Pascal Struijk thrive – but key strength in depth is desperately needed.

Elvedi, who’s been dubbed “world-class” by former coach Eugen Polanski, ranked in the top 14% of defenders in Europe last campaign for defensive contributions per 90.

His tally of 8.2 clearances made per 90 was also higher than any player in the Leeds senior ranks – whilst also placing him in the top 10% of players in Germany’s top-flight.

Even in possession, the 29-year-old reflected his all-round ability, subsequently completing 92% of his attempted passes with 2.8 of which being long balls into attacking areas.

The recent interest in Charles highlights Leeds’ ambitions to invest in promising young talents who can flourish in Yorkshire and be a mainstay for many years to come.

However, a deal for Elvedi would hand the club the needed proven talent to make an immediate impact at Elland Road and push the side further up the table in 2026/27.

£8m for a player of his quality and experience would be a phenomenal piece of business and one that could go down as one of the signings of the summer in England.
