Aston Villa. Europa League champions d and Champions League competitors (again).

Unai Emery has changed lives in the Midlands, restoring Villa to their position among England’s elite after so many years.

It’s surely fair to say that the Villans have not only disrupted but dismantled the ‘big six’ in the Premier League, tightening their grip on the ascendancy.

After all, even if Villa lost to Freiburg in Istanbul (they didn’t, they won 3-0), their fourth-place finish in the Premier League would have secured passage onto the Champions League train.

Excitement is the overriding feeling heading into 2026/26, but perhaps a bit of anxiety too, with Morgan Rogers emerging as a top target for Arsenal.

Aston Villa re-join race for Premier League midfielder

Rogers is “one of the world’s best”, according to Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, and replacing him, should he leave, will not be easy.

But Aston Villa may have to swallow their pride and make the sale, putting their faith in Emery to continue advancing this remarkable project.

He will need replacing, though, and NSWE have already earmarked an exciting replacement.

As per Football Insider, Aston Villa and Chelsea are ready to leap back into the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall, who is determined to leave north London for a new challenge this summer.

Bergvall, 20 years old, will be expected to fetch a transfer fee of around £50m, with Spurs seemingly resigned to letting him leave after resisting Villa and Chelsea’s enquiries in January, embroiled as they were in a battle to climb away from the cellar of the Premier League.

It is now suggested that it will be something of an ‘open race’ for the Sweden international, and Villa will have to hope that their previous groundwork and status as a Champions League side (a status that Chelsea do not boast) will hold sway when they approach the negotiating table.

Why Bergvall can be a shrewd Rogers replacement for Aston Villa

Bergvall has been at Tottenham for a year and a half. He is still so young, but then he rejected Barcelona to sign for Spurs, and is undoubtedly one of the most talented young midfielders in Europe.

Across 78 appearances in all competitions, the elegant and progressive prospect has surely proven that he has what it takes to thrive at an outfit such as Aston Villa, who would surely offer him a more stable platform from which he could showcase his ability.

Let’s not forget, Emery has a remarkable ability to develop raw prospects, to shape them into superstars. In February 2024, Aston Villa signed Rogers from Championship club Middlesbrough for just £8m plus add-ons, and in spite of some viewing the addition as a waste of space, he has now established himself as one of his country’s superstars.

Bergvall is not as all-out-attack as Rogers. Instead, the young Swede floats from box to box, flicking a switch and ploughing forward when the situation demands.

Times have been tough at Tottenham, but he has shone throughout, hardly flawless but offering plenty of promise. A natural progressor, Bergvall completed 62.5% of his dribbles in the Premier League last year, putting him alongside the likes of Rogers as one of the division’s foremost ball-carriers.

He has only scored two goals for Tottenham, but Bergvall has shown a propensity for darting forward and into the danger area, into the box.

Emery has the skill to fashion him into a superstar, perhaps deploying him in a more advanced berth than we have often seen at Spurs, therefore allowing him to blossom as Aston Villa’s exciting Rogers replacement.
