One year ago, Luke Shaw claimed that Manchester United should be fighting for the Premier League title under Ruben Amorim’s wing.

He said that that was the Red Devils goal, and he was ridiculed for it. Now, just one year on, United should surely be fighting to achieve that feat, albeit under new management, with Michael Carrick in the dugout.

United have come on leaps and bounds since Amorim was dismissed from his post in January, and after qualifying for the Champions League with a third-place finish, they are targeting a series of midfield signings to support Carrick’s ambitions.

Man United willing to offer midfielder big-money salary

Manchester United have already agreed a £35m deal with Atalanta this summer for the transfer of Ederson, and the Brazilian midfielder will offer some much-needed protection at the centre of the Old Trafford park, with Casemiro’s contract expiring in a matter of days.

However, with Manuel Ugarte now out for the count after injuring his knee against Spain for Uruguay at the World Cup – he may miss up to a year of football – it’s clear that Carrick needs even more central firepower, and INEOS agree, aiming for the stars with their latest transfer target.

That’s according to reports in Spain, who believe that Manchester United are willing to make Aurelien Tchouameni one of their highest-paid players this summer. He supposedly earns £205k-per-week in Spain, and would likely be looking for even more at Old Trafford.

Real Madrid are not itching to sell the 26-year-old France international, who is contracted to the Santiago Bernabeu until 2028, but they would entertain irresistable offers.

A number of outfits across Europe, such as Liverpool, are eager to sign the £70m-rated Tchouameni this summer, but emphasis has been placed on the Red Devils’ interest in the Premier League.

In short, this is very much one to keep a close eye on, with INEOS no doubt of the impression that they can pull off a Casemiro repeat here.

Why Tchouameni can be Man Utd’s new Casemiro

Tchouameni has developed into a superstar over the past four years, having joined Real Madrid from Monaco in a deal rising to £85m in 2022. He has won the full gamut.

Hailed as “the best defensive midfielder in the world” by former teammate Chema Andres, Tchouameni is established at the very highest level of European and international football, and he would certainly add a steely dimension to a United midfield losing Casemiro’s experience at the highest level.

Casemiro is 34 years old, after all, so he shouldn’t be expected to operate at the same level as Real Madrid’s starring number six. Though, it should be said that United would lose something by way of attacking impact, should they make this change.

But Tchouameni does not purport to be something that he is not. He knows that he is a deep-lying midfielder, someone who pulls strings and sweeps up and controls traffic. Think of him as the ultimate footballing handyman, playing a role that would make sweeping changes to United’s overall play.

He is so confident on the ball. United ranked ninth for passing accuracy in the Premier League last season (82.9%), and Tchouameni would help raise that standard, allowing the Red Devils to be even more fluent and aggressive in their attacking efforts without leaving careless openings from which opponents and counterstrike.

Casemiro put in a number of admirable shifts under Carrick’s management, but he is not going to get any better as he enters the twilit stage of his decorated career, and Tchouameni could be the natural successor, given that he comes from Los Blancos.

Casemiro has had his ups and downs for the Theatre of Dreams side, but he ended up cementing cult status at the Theatre of Dreams, crucial in guiding United back into the Premier League.

Now, though, Tchouameni can take the reins, leading the club to even more illustrious heights.
