The definition of Trinity is “three in one” and the school lived up to its name this spring with a historic season.
One week after the Shamrocks were crowned national champions, the program completed a rare sweep of the sport’s top honors with Willoughby and Arnold earning top player and coach honors, respectively.
Arnold guided Trinity to a No. 1 national finish while continuing a transformative 12-year run that has established the Shamrocks as a national power. He has compiled a 375-61 record with state championships in 2021, 2025 and 2026, building on a program that had never previously won a state title despite 16 regional championships dating back to 1970.
“Our scheduling philosophy is always focused on playing the best competition every chance we get,” Arnold said. “We schedule games across Kentucky every year against the best programs available and played in the prestigious National High School Invitational. Playing four of the top baseball programs in the country gave us an opportunity to showcase our players and prove we are one of the top high school programs in the country.”
Arnold credited the team’s culture and leadership for making the season possible.
“We became the best team in the country this year because everyone showed up daily with a commitment to working hard, sticking to our plan and consistent attention to detail,” Arnold said. “Great player leadership led to an unwavering belief that they could pick each other up regardless of any adversity during our season.”
Willoughby was the centerpiece of that championship group. His signature performance came in the KHSAA state championship game, where he carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning and finished with a one-hit gem in Trinity’s 12-0 win over Boyd County.
The MaxPreps National Player of the Year will continue his career at the University of Kentucky, where he is expected to be among the nation’s most closely-watched incoming freshmen.
“His impact goes far beyond the stat sheet,” Arnold said of Willoughby. “His internal motivation, competitiveness and focus rubbed off on every player in our locker room and inspired us as coaches every day. He has the mental toughness, baseball IQ and ability to rise to every challenge.”
