It felt inevitable that Cammy Devlin would be unveiled as a new signing for Glasgow Rangers once it was confirmed that he would not be staying at Hearts.

The Scottish Premiership side officially announced that the Australian star would not be putting pen to paper on a new contract at Tynecastle, before the Light Blues confirmed his arrival at Ibrox on a two-year contract.

Devlin will now play for Derek McInnes for the second season running, as will Lawrence Shankland, and should be able to hit the ground running as a player who already knows what the manager demands.

The 28-year-old midfielder, who did not play a single minute at the World Cup, started 27 of his 28 appearances in the Premiership for Hearts last season under the Scottish boss.

Why Cammy Devlin will not be a starter for Rangers

Despite being a regular starter for the Jam Tarts under McInnes in the 2025/26 campaign, Devlin may not find himself in the starting line-up week-in-week-out at Rangers next season.

As impressive as he can be out of possession, averaging 6.1 tackles and interceptions per match in the league last term, his work in possession can leave a bit to be desired at times.

The difference in quality on the ball between Devlin and Nicolas Raskin, for example, is stark and shows that he is not as effective with the ball at his feet as the current midfielders at the club.

The Australia international is a combative midfield star who can offer plenty off the ball, but he is not a controller with his passing and does not offer goals or assists with any regularity.

Raskin is the gold standard for the midfield role at Ibrox and the Gers should be looking for a player who is similar in quality to him in possession if he moves on from Ibrox.

That is why Devlin could be a rotation option, mainly coming off the bench to see out games, rather than arriving to improve the starting XI of McInnes’ team.

Rangers preparing bid for better signing than Devlin

Whilst it is important to add depth to the squad, the Scottish giants also need to add quality to their first-choice XI and they are now looking at a player who would be a more impactful signing than Devlin.

Journalist Christian Vaquero reports that Glasgow Rangers are interested in a deal to bring Vaclav Cerny back to Ibrox, this time from Besiktas, in the summer transfer window.

The reporter claims that the Gers have already had an offer of around £5m turned down by the Turkish side, who signed him from Wolfsburg for £6m last year.

Vaquero reveals, though, that the Light Blues are preparing a new bid for the Czechia international and are confident that they can close a deal for less than £8.5m before the window slams in September.

The 28-year-old attacker spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Ibrox, of course, and racked up 24 goal contributions in the Premiership and the Europa League combined.

None of the Light Blues wingers from the 2025/26 season hit double figures for goals in the Premiership or reached 20 goals and assists combined in all competitions.

Mikey Moore and Andreas Skov Olsen have also both returned to their parent clubs after their respective loan deals, which means that McInnes’ squad is currently looking light in the wide areas.

Whilst Devlin has Dan Neil, Mohamed Diomande, Tochi Chukwuani, and Raskin ahead of him at the moment, Cerny would not have any real competition on the right wing, with Djeidi Gassama and Findlay Curtis preferring the left flank.

The £8.5m-rated attacker could slot straight into the team as a starter, given that Oliver Antman, the club’s only natural right winger, only scored one Premiership goal last term.

Cerny, who produced six goals and eight assists at Besiktas last season, would instantly improve the Rangers squad with his proven ability to score and assist goals on a regular basis on the right flank in Scotland.

That is why a deal to bring him back to Ibrox would eclipse last week’s move for Devlin on a free transfer, as he would be a far more impressive and impactful addition to the group ahead of next season.
