Aston Villa are now plotting a hijack of AS Roma to sign West Ham United star Crysencio Summerville.

Following their relegation from the Premier League, it was always going to be difficult for West Ham to keep hold of Summerville, and he put himself in the shop window even more by impressing for the Netherlands at the World Cup.

Although Oranje were knocked out by Morocco at the round of 32 stage, the winger had more than enough time to catch the eye, and picked up two goals and two assists in four appearances.

The 24-year-old was following up a solid 2025-26 campaign in the Premier League, in which he amassed five goals and four assists in 31 matches.

During the early stages of the season, West Ham Fan TV presenter Dan Lawless lauded the Netherlands star as “unbelievable” and a “special player”, but it appears as though his time at the London Stadium could be coming to an end.

Aston Villa enter the race to sign Crysencio Summerville

According to a report from Sky Italia, Roma are ready to submit a €48m (£40m) offer for Summerville, who has the same agent as Aston Villa’s Lamare Bogarde, but they are now facing competition from the Midlands outfit.

Villa hold a strong interest in signing the Dutchman, who is set to make a decision about his next move soon.

Indeed, after returning from Miami on Thursday, the former Leeds United man will choose his next club, with Tottenham Hotspur also keen, while Manchester United recently opened formal talks.

Journalist Ben Jacobs added: “Spurs and Manchester United both like Summerville. Now he’s back from the World Cup, I think an exit is possible.

“West Ham’s perspective is that they don’t really feel a need financially to sell, but there’ll be the player’s position to consider and Summerville doesn’t want to be playing in the Championship.”

Football FanCast’s Verdict

Credibility

With the news coming from an established news outlet in Sky Italia, it is likely to be trustworthy. Villa could certainly do with signing a new winger, as the signing of Evann Guessand didn’t work out, with the 25-year-old being loaned to Crystal Palace in January.

Finances

It remains to be seen whether West Ham are willing to accept Roma’s £40m offer. However, elsewhere it has been suggested it could take £50m to prise Summerville away from his current employers, which would be a large fee for Villa, who aren’t out of the woods FFP-wise.

Insight

Although the 2025-26 campaign was very poor for West Ham on the whole, the forward impressed on a personal level. An average of 1.9 successful dribbles per 90 in the Premier League ranked him second in the squad. However, the six-cap Netherlands star may have to improve his end product, as he squandered seven big chances.

Impact

Given his exploits at the World Cup, Summerville could be a statement signing for Villa. and he could challenge for John McGinn’s starting spot on the right, or Emiliano Buendia’s place in Unai Emery‘s side on the right.
