Haissem Hassan would give Celtic something every dominant side needs, a winger willing to attack his defender instead of always choosing the safe pass.
Why Celtic are targeting Egypt forward Haissem Hassan
The 24-year-old is naturally left-footed but usually operates from the right, allowing him to drive inside or create space for an overlapping full-back. That variety could be valuable for Martin O’Neill, particularly against Scottish Premiership opponents who use the low block repeatedly against them.
Hassan’s goal return is not spectacular, but his wider record explains Celtic’s interest.
He bagged four goals and three assists across 39 league appearances as Real Oviedo won promotion in 2024/25.
During their following La Liga campaign, which unfortunately ended in relegation, he only managed three assists for Oviedo, who struggled at the bottom all campaign.
Nevertheless, the Spanish top flight is one of the toughest leagues in world football, and there is every reason to believe he could shine at Celtic.
His career has also exposed him to several different demands. Hassan developed in France, moved to Villarreal and gained second-tier experience with Mirandés and Sporting Gijón before establishing himself at Oviedo.
He has represented France at youth level, including at the Under-17 World Cup, but now plays senior international football for Egypt and was at the World Cup this summer.
Celtic would be backing a quick, technical winger whose best years should still be ahead of him, and O’Neill needs more options capable of creating something from nothing.
Hassan’s direct running could lift the tempo at Celtic Park, and he is equally comfortable receiving the ball in tight spaces. At £7 million, the attraction is his potential as much as his current form.
Celtic learn Haissem Hassan update with £7m being prepared
Journalist Pablo Oliveira reports Celtic are optimistic about signing Hassan and are preparing to formalise an offer worth approximately £7 million, adding that the club’s board want to seal a deal ‘as soon as possible’.
Separate coverage supports the broader picture that the Egyptian has become an important Celtic target, and recent reports describe Hassan as one of the players being pursued as O’Neill reshapes his squad ahead of the new campaign.
Marseille have also been credited with interest, meaning Celtic may need to act quickly if they intend to take control of negotiations.
The player’s contract situation offers Oviedo some protection. Hassan signed a deal running until June 2027, while reports in Spain and Scotland have placed his release clause at around £10 million.
A £7 million proposal would fall below that figure, although Oviedo’s relegation and Hassan approaching the final year of his contract means they need to consider offers.

Villarreal are reportedly entitled to a large percentage of any future transfer fee, though, so that may make Oviedo less willing to accept a heavily discounted offer.
Hassan has also spoken openly about the possibility of leaving. While remaining respectful towards Oviedo, he acknowledged the business side of football and suggested no player at the club should be considered certain to stay.
Celtic have a realistic opportunity, and Oliveira’s update points towards an imminent formal approach as the Hoops board attempt a quick-fire deal.
