Leeds have been offered a golden chance to sign Brighton keeper Carl Rushworth, and a deal could make plenty of sense.
Rushworth has spent the last five years proving himself at every level of the EFL and now looks ready for the next step.
The 25-year-old has built his reputation the hard way. After leaving Huddersfield Town as a teenager, he joined Brighton’s academy before heading out on loan after loan to gain first-team experience.
It is a route that has taken him from Worthing in non-league football to Walsall, Lincoln City, Swansea City, Hull City and Coventry City, giving him well over 200 senior appearances before most goalkeepers even begin to reach their peak.
Rushworth’s record also stands up to scrutiny.
He played every Championship game for Swansea during the 2023/24 season, making 46 league appearances, before returning to the division with Coventry last season and again featuring in all 46 league matches.
Goalkeepers who can stay fit, cope with the physical demands of a long Championship campaign and deliver week after week are not easy to find.
His performances have not gone unnoticed either. Rushworth was part of England’s Under-21 European Championship-winning squad in 2023 before earning a place in the Championship Team of the Season after helping Coventry win the title.
Those are achievements that suggest he is no longer simply a promising young goalkeeper but one ready to establish himself at the highest level, which is echoed by Frank Lampard, who called him a ‘top’ shot stopper.
Daniel Farke also knows exactly what he needs from his goalkeeper, with Rushworth showing throughout his loan career that he is comfortable taking responsibility and organising the defence in front of him.
He is an ideal fit for Leeds as they look to replace Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow.
Leeds offered Carl Rushworth deal with Brighton ready to sell
According to TEAMtalk journalist Graeme Bailey, Rushworth has now been offered to both Leeds and Newcastle by intermediaries as Brighton gear up to sell him.

Credibility |
Graeme Bailey has covered transfers for many years and is one of TEAMtalk’s leading reporters. He has built strong contacts across English football, particularly in the EFL and Premier League. But much like the wider media, not every exclusive hits the mark. |
|
Finances |
Brighton have a strong record of developing players before selling for profit, but in this instance, they may have to sell on the cheap with his deal expiring in 2027. Rushworth’s age, homegrown status and outstanding Championship experience should still command a healthy fee for them, though, with the player also counting as pure profit after coming through theirb academy. |
|
Insight |
Rushworth’s career has been built on patience. Released by Huddersfield as a youngster, he worked his way through Brighton’s academy before impressing during loans across every level of the EFL. |
|
Impact |
Rushworth could give Leeds a serious goalkeeping solution. His experience of promotion races, consistent availability and calm presence would strengthen Farke’s options there, while his age means he could still become Leeds’ long-term number one if he adapts to Premier League football. |
The Seagulls are increasingly open to offloading the goalkeeper, creating an opportunity for clubs looking to strengthen between the posts.
Leeds’ interest would be very easy to understand, having lost a host of keepers, and Rushworth arrives at exactly the right age, with hundreds of senior games behind him but potentially his best years still ahead.
Eddie Howe’s side, meanwhile, have already been linked with both Rushworth and James Trafford competing for the number one shirt, meaning any move would depend on how the club shapes its squad before the transfer window closes.

Brighton aren’t in a strong position considering Rushworth’s deal expires next summer either, meaning Leeds or Newcastle could snap him up for a bargain fee.
Whether Leeds decide to move remains to be seen, but this is one transfer that feels logical.
Rushworth has already conquered the Championship on more than one occasion. The next challenge is proving he belongs in the Premier League.
