Arsenal‘s interest in Ezri Konsa has been building for several weeks, and it is easy to understand why they like the Aston Villa defender.
Konsa has enjoyed another outstanding year for both club and country, cementing his reputation as one of the Premier League’s most dependable defenders.
He played a key role in Villa’s Europa League-winning campaign under Unai Emery, with his consistency at centre-back proving crucial.
His excellent form carried onto the international stage, where he produced a series of composed displays for England during the World Cup and further strengthened his growing reputation as a defender capable of performing at the very highest level.
Arsenal’s need has also become more urgent.
William Saliba’s back injury has created uncertainty ahead of the new season, with the France international potentially facing surgery after aggravating the problem during the World Cup.
Losing one of the world’s best centre-backs, even temporarily, would leave a significant hole in Mikel Arteta’s defence and has accelerated the search for experienced cover on the right side of central defence.
Konsa fits that profile almost perfectly.
The 28-year-old brings hundreds of Premier League appearances, outstanding positional awareness and the calmness needed to play in a possession-based system.
His pace allows him to defend large spaces behind the back line, while his comfort on the ball makes him an ideal fit for the way Arsenal build attacks from the back.

According to the Daily Mail, via Villa Report, Arsenal did indeed make an approach to Aston Villa to ascertain their stance on selling the ex-Charlton star.
The report claims there remains a sizeable gap between the two clubs’ valuations.
Arsenal are believed to value the England international at around £30-35 million, while Villa see him as a £60 million player and have no intention of lowering their asking price.
It is also reported that Konsa would welcome the opportunity to join Arsenal, although he understands Aston Villa remain reluctant sellers.
Villa’s position is understandable.
Konsa has become one of Emery’s most trusted players and remains central to the club’s ambitions both domestically and in Europe. Replacing a defender of his quality would be extremely difficult, particularly late in the transfer window.

From Arsenal’s perspective, however, the interest makes complete sense.
Whether they eventually decide to meet Villa’s valuation is another question entirely, but their admiration for Konsa is clearly genuine.
This now feels like a transfer that will depend almost entirely on money. Arsenal know exactly the player they want, while Andrea Berta knows exactly how much it would take to persuade them to sell.
If they deem Konsa too expensive, the north Londoners have also been looking at signing John Stones on a free transfer.
