Liverpool target looks like an elite-level Trey Nyoni

Liverpool don’t plan on repeating the events of the 2025/26 season, with the appointment of Andoni Iraola supposed to restore a high-intensity approach to a side who became slow and ponderous under Arne Slot.

The 2024/25 Premier League champions squeezed their way into the Champions League through a fifth-place finish at the end of a dour and unsuccessful title defence.

There is much still to sort out. Jeremy Jacquet and Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo will help score up a leaky red backline, while Victor Munoz should help Liverpool rediscover some speed and flair down the left wing.

However, there’s much still to do, and with efforts being made to sign two Paris Saint-Germain forwards in Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye, the sapped midfield feels to have been somewhat rejected.

Enter Trey Nyoni?

How Iraola could use Nyoni this season

Nyoni might only be 19 years old, but he has established himself as a valuable option at the very start of the Iraola era. Liverpool missed a number of key pieces throughout their pre-season tour of the United States, but the young midfielder shone at the heart of Iraola’s system.

If anything, Nyoni’s performances over the past few weeks have confirmed that he meets the criteria of a genuine option for the year ahead.

Nyoni joined Liverpool from Leicester City in 2023, and he has been slowly integrated thereafter. It has paid off, with this summer’s iteration of the teenage midfielder looking strong and confident and purposeful. The Athletic’s James Pearce hailed him as “one of the big success stories of this tour“.

Across 45 minutes against Leeds United, Nyoni shone. His performance wasn’t perfectly reflected through data, but the confidence with which he controlled and dictated from the engine room allowed the likes of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz ahead of him to connect and seek to breach the Whites backline.

He was withdrawn at the interval, and Liverpool fell apart, shipping four goals. However, Nyoni only featured six times in the Premier League last season, and he did not start any of those games, so it’s important that Liverpool do not push him too hard in his journey to the fore.

Liverpool eyeing move to sign Nyoni upgrade

Both Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones could play for other clubs by the end of the transfer window, and so while Nyoni is touted for big things, it would be foolish and self-destructive to neglect a gaping hole at the centre of the Liverpool hull.

Well, according to FootMercato, Liverpool are among the interested Premier League clubs in Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, having already ‘expressed interest’ this summer, suggesting talks have been held.

Crystal Palace have already made a bid – with Nottingham Forest currently preparing a formal package.

Manchester United are also keen, so if Liverpool are in need of an all-action figure to charge Iraola’s system, there is no time to waste. Monaco would be open to doing business should their €50m (£43m) valuation be met.

Analyst and Como scout Ben Mattinson remarked at the “complete midfielder” back in December 2024, presciently asserting that Monaco had developed a future superstar with an all-encompassing range that would perplex most elite midfielders.

This could be the signing for Liverpool to go for. If Jones or Mac Allister (or indeed both) leave Anfield within the next month, a decision against strengthening in the centre would beggar belief.

Camara excelled across 22 Ligue 1 starts last season. He missed patches of the term due to injury, but won 5.6 duels and 2.3 tackles per game while progressing the ball forward with precision and consistency. He covered a ridiculous amount of ground, and he proved that he has what it takes to serve at the heart of an ambitious Liverpool midfield.

Nyoni is going to be special. The kid has the potential to become a superstar at the heart of Iraola’s project, emulating Alex Scott when under the Spaniard’s wing at Bournemouth.

But he’s not ready to start 38 Premier League games over the next ten months. Ergo, Camara needs to come in and prop this Anfield side up.

It does feel like someone like Jones could leave Liverpool this summer. Nyoni is ready to play a bigger role, but in Camara, the Merseysiders would land a ready-made upgrade to charge Iraola’s title-chasing team.
