Why £6m Rangers target could be the ideal Driouech alternative for McInnes

It’s far too early to judge too harshly, particularly considering the transfer window hasn’t yet come to a close, although there is already a familiar feeling creeping in at Glasgow Rangers.

The Ibrox side were lauded for the pace and precision of their early business, but those arrivals have swiftly come under scrutiny following a difficult start to the season.

Might it be a case of quantity over quality? That’s still to be decided, yet the fact remains that it hasn’t been a smooth start to the Derek McInnes regime.

Thursday’s defeat in Poland showcased that further reinforcements are essential, with PSV Eindhoven’s Couhaib Driouech seemingly among those on the agenda.

Why Rangers are so keen to sign Driouech

Daisuke Yokota has arrived through the door since the opening day draw with Dundee United, but the Gers want more, having already seen an £8m bid rebuffed for Frosinone’s Fares Ghedjemis.

Attention has turned to the aforementioned Driouech, the £6m+ winger also courting attention from the likes of Burnley and Celta Vigo, as the Light Blues battle to bring him to Glasgow.

The fleet-footed left-winger is courting such interest amid a string of impressive displays in last season’s Champions League, scoring and assisting five goals in just seven games in the competition.

That included a brace against Arne Slot’s Liverpool at Anfield, with the 24-year-old firmly putting himself in the shop window, having not exactly been a key man in Eindhoven otherwise.

Indeed, in 2025/26, he did actually start only five Eredivisie games, albeit while scoring and assisting ten goals, suggesting that more consistent game time might see him emerge as a real force at his next club.

The Moroccan had earned a move to the current Dutch champions in 2024 after scoring and assisting 12 league goals in his final season at Excelsior, having also averaged 1.3 key passes and a stellar 2.3 successful dribbles per game that year.

It is that form that Rangers would seemingly be banking on, with it hard to see Driouech as anything other than an upgrade on McInnes’ current wide options.

That’s not to say the Old Firm side don’t also have other irons in the fire, with the rival interest in Driouech suggesting that they shouldn’t place all their eggs in one basket.

Rangers need quality on the flanks, no question, with Djeidi Gassama and Ryan Naderi both hooked at the break at Tannadice, while new man Yokota suffered the same fate in the 2-1 loss to Jagellonia.

If Driouech proves unattainable, the Gers do have a potential alternative in the form of Fenerbahce Oguz Aydin, with Football Insider reporting the Premiership side are plotting a move for the 25-year-old.

It is claimed that the Turkey international – who was part of his country’s World Cup squad – is now a ‘leading target’ for those at Ibrox, with McInnes wanting at least one more winger in the building.

Prior reports have indicated that Aydin could fetch a similar fee to Driouech of around £6m, with there certainly merit in this pursuit, even if he didn’t exactly enjoy a sparkling 2025/26 in Turkey.

Like Driouech, Aydin isn’t necessarily a key figure for the Istanbul side, hence talk of an exit, having also only started five league games last time out, registering just two assists.

A versatile winger who can play on both sides, the Fenerbahce man did score and assist ten Super Lig goals the year prior, albeit with his best work, like Driouech, coming for his former employers in 2023/24.

Then at Turkish rivals Antalyaspor, Aydin scored 13 and registered a further eight assists, while racking up a remarkable tally of 19 ‘big chances’ created.

Like Driouech, he’s a truly creative, dynamic winger, both adept when supplying a progressive pass or dragging his side forward from the flanks, as seen in his average of 1.8 key passes and 1.5 successful dribbles per game that season.

He hasn’t been able to replicate the form he showcased in that breakout year since then, but Aydin’s inclusion in Turkey’s World Cup squad speaks to how highly regarded he is.

Indeed, in his sole outing in the competition in the final group game against the United States, the 12-cap international was particularly impressive out of possession, winning eight duels and six tackles from his right-wing berth.

Like Driouech, he might not have been a name being mentioned a few weeks ago, but there’s plenty of reason to be excited by his potential arrival at Ibrox.

At present, Andrew Cavenagh’s pro-Scottish or pro-Premiership bias when it comes to new signings doesn’t appear to be working.
