Throughout the 2025/26 season, Nico O’Reilly quickly emerged as one of the standout full-backs in world football.

It what was a breakthrough year under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, O’Reilly was outstanding at left-back before ultimately moving into midfield, the position he played in during his academy days.

He’s not just a City regular now but he’s also one of the first names on the team sheet at international level for England too.

Alvaro Carreras – Real Madrid and Spain

Part of Real Madrid’s youth set-up from 2017 to 2020 before joining Man Utd, Alvaro Carreras is now back at the Bernabeu after impressing for Benfica in recent seasons.

Madrid paid €50m and gave Carreras a six-year contract, and he made a big impact under Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa in 2025/26.

Federico Dimarco – Inter Milan and Inter

The “best in the world” according to Inter Milan youngster Matteo Cocchi is Federico Dimarco, who has also been hailed by Jay-Z for his displays on the left-hand side.

The Italy international has turned into one of the top European full-backs in recent years, helping Inter Milan win a number of Italian trophies.

Playing as a wing-back, Dimarco has been a constant source of goals from a defensive position, contributing to 10 or more goals in each of the last three seasons.

Alejandro Balde – Barcelona and Spain

Described as “one of the best left-backs in Europe” by scout Jacek Kulig when he was still a teenager, Alejandro Balde has continued to impress for Barcelona and is now a regular for the Catalan giants in his early 20s.

Providing plenty of assists and scoring against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup, Balde could go on to become another great out of the La Masia academy and is arguably going under the radar due to the performances of Lamine Yamal in attack.

Nathaniel Brown – Bayern Munich and Germany

One of the best young left-backs around right now is Nathaniel Brown of Germany.

He made an outstanding impact for his country at the World Cup in 2026 and subsequently got his big move, joining Bayern Munich from Frankfurt for a whopping £47.7m.

Riccardo Calafiori – Arsenal and Italy

Riccardo Calafiori now appears to have taken over at Arsenal as Mikel Arteta’s first choice left-back, with the Italian also capable of filling in at centre-back if required.

Arteta hailed Calafiori’s unpredictability, saying his attacking edge can be “very difficult to control for the opponent”. His stunning first Gunners goal against Man City highlights that. He’s now a Premier League winner for good measure too.

Alphonso Davies – Bayern Munich and Canada

Another extremely quick left-back is Alphonso Davies, who has been starring for Bayern Munich since 2019.

The 25-year-old captain of Canada is currently out injured but has already won numerous Bundesliga titles and the Champions League with the German giants.

Vincent Kompany has described the attacking full-back as an “absolute top player” who can get even better.

Alejandro Grimaldo – Bayer Leverkusen and Spain

Helping Bayer Leverkusen to an undefeated double in 2024 was Alejandro Grimaldo, who has been described as the ‘perfect wing-back’ due to his ability to contribute to attacks and provide defensive stability.

The Spain international has continued to impress in Germany and is “extremely intelligent and confident player on the ball”, and at the age of 30, appears to be at the peak of his powers.

Marc Cucurella – Real Madrid and Spain

Marc Cucurella used to be seen as something of a liability but he has been one of the most improved players in Europe in recent years, making his mark at Chelsea before earning a move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2026.

He was the outstanding left-back at the World Cup and deservedly lifted the famous trophy at the end of the tournament.

Nuno Mendes – PSG and Portugal

Paris Saint-Germain have been a team transformed under Luis Enrique, and someone who has contributed greatly to that success is left-back Nuno Mendes.

The Portuguese star is still just 24 years of age and is the highest valued left-back right now. Enrique has described Mendes as a “fighter plane” who is “capable of defending against one of the best players in the world”.

He also contributes in attack with more than 10 goal contributions in 2024/25 and another 13 in 2025/26 – a perfect blend for any modern-day full-back.
