Some of the best players in the world are in football’s engine room, possessing an array of qualities, whether that be protecting their defence, dictating the flow of the play or creating goalscoring opportunities for teammates.
With such a range of playing styles across the midfield spectrum, working out the best in this position can be an unenviable task. But we have given it a go anyway, with plenty of star power in this list of the top 20 midfielders in the world today.
How have we determined it? Well, here’s what we’ve factored into the equation.
Ranking factors
To help rank the players in order, we have considered the following criteria:
- Current form – how well a player has performed in the past few months
- Importance to their teams – how influential they are to their teams’ performances
- Role – how unique their skillset is
- Reputation – what others say about them.
So, without furtherado, here are the best midfielders in the world right now…
10
Bruno Guimaraes – Arsenal and Brazil
A warrior, a leader, a player with a never-say-die attitutde, Bruno Guimaraes is one of the most complete midfielders in the world right now, notably joining Arsenal for a £75m fee in the summer of 2026.
The former Newcastle captain deservedly earned his big move after a 2025/26 campaign in which he scored nine and assisted eight in all competitions for the Toon. There are not many better central players around.
9
Dominik Szoboszlai – Liverpool and Hungary
As part of a relentless Liverpool side, Dominik Szoboszlai has become a giant in the Reds’ midfield.
The Hungarian improved on his goal threat from his first season at Anfield, coming amid a slight change in position, showcasing his versatility in a more advanced role under Arne Slot.
Now looking right at home in England, Szoboszlai is on the path to greatness on Merseyside, with Arne Slot labelling him as “unbelievable” amid his role in Liverpool comfortably sauntering to the Premier League title.

Joao Neves – PSG and Portugal
Joao Neves’ first full season at the Parc des Princes couldn’t have gone any better, playing regularly under Luis Enrique and lifting all there was to be won, including the Champions League. He then went and did it all over again during his second campaign, lifting a successive European crown for the Paris giants.
The ball-playing midfielder was key to PSG’s success on the continent and has continued to star in the French capital, making his initial £50m move from Benfica look a real bargain.
7
Federico Valverde – Real Madrid and Uruguay
One of the best all-round players in Europe right now is undeniably Federico Valverde. You name it, the Uruguay international can do it.
Whether it’s playing at full-back or in midfield, he’s been elite at Madrid for a number of years, capping off his time at the club with a remarkable Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City in March 2026.
It was a trio of goals that cemented him as one of the best players in world football.
6
Rodri – Barcelona and Spain
The last two years of Rodri’s career at Manchester City were filled with injury. It was safe to say he did not look like a Ballon d’Or winner during that time.
Yet, the Spaniard rolled back the years during the World Cup in 2026 to cement himself as one of the game’s greatest ever midfielders.
As he lifted the famous trophy in New Jersey, he was also crowned the competition’s best player. He is now a huge loss to Manchester City after joining Barcelona.
5
Declan Rice – Arsenal and England
Rice’s 2024/25 season exploded into life following his free-kick double against Real Madrid in the Champions League, and he has only got better since then. He is a giant for both club and country.
Set-piece heroics aside, Rice has proved to be a mainstay in the middle for Arsenal since his £105m move from West Ham United in 2023, and his class was again on show in 2025/26 as he won his Premier League title.
He’s a tough tackler, has remarkable energy and knows how to pop up with a goal too. There seems to be no weakness to Rice’s game.

Bruno Fernandes – Manchester United and Portugal
Bruno Fernandes has been Man Utd’s shining light in recent years, with the Portugal international arguably the only world-class player on the books at Old Trafford.
At his best in an attacking midfield role, Pep Guardiola has even called Fernandes one of the best creative players he has ever seen. The fact he registered 21 Premier League assists in 2025/26 says it all.

3
Pedri – Barcelona and Spain
When you’re starting nearly every game in midfield for Barcelona, you’re probably pretty damn good. And Pedri is just that, helping the Catalans to the La Liga title last season.
In doing so, he has gained praise from his manager, teammates and former Barca legends. Xavi played him whenever he was fit, even as a teenager; Hansi Flick has been left lost for words from his performances in the past; while Dani Olmo has expressed how easy it is to play with him.
These are comments typically reserved for living legends, Ballon d’Or winners or seasoned greats – not a 23-year-old kid. However, there’s no reason Pedri cannot become all of those things in the near future.
Already a champion domestically and internationally, Pedri has had experiences in his short career that very few can compare.

2
Vitinha – PSG and Portugal
Vitinha was actually the highest-ranked midfielder in the 2025 Ballon d’Or, finishing third behind Lamine Yamal and PSG teammate Ousmane Dembele.
The Portuguese star won the Nations League with his country, lifted the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup with his club and has been influential in some huge games in recent times, making his midfield job look extremely easy.
He’s now a multiple Champions League winner too and only seems to be getting better.
1
Jude Bellingham – Real Madrid and England
Jude Bellingham may only be 23, but he is a Champions League and La Liga winner, and starring for a Real Madrid side wearing the iconic No 5, no less.
More trophies will surely follow in Madrid, and having shown his ability to drag his country to a World Cup semi-final, presently, there are no better midfielders in the land. He scored seven goals in the summer of 2026 with only Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe bagging more in North America.
Playing around players like Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe, it would be easy to be shown up in such a star-studded side, but it is clear he has not only held his own, but elevated Real Madrid’s overall level – which is no mean feat.
