Alabaster (Ala.)Thompson safety Junior Tu’upo spearheaded a stingy effort in the secondary on Thursday night.
The Warriors opened a season in which expectations are sky high with a convincing 41-14 road win at Phenix City Central, another program with championship aspirations.
“I think it’s just a, a sneak peek for another state championship run,” Tu’upo said.
Tu’upo and a star-studded secondary cleaned up some communication issues — a rare case of being overly communicative led to some chunk plays in the first half, he said — and didn’t allow a score in the second half of the contest.
It could very well be just the beginning of a special season for Tu’upo, a three-star Texas commit who saw his interest spike to a national level during the spring and ensuing summer-visit schedule. Tu’upo took official visits to defending national champion Indiana, perennial playoff program Oregon, and in-state schools Auburn and Alabama.
And of course Texas, where the 6-foot-2, 190-pound safety committed in June.
He’ll be at the Longhorns anticipated September matchup against Ohio State and remains firmly committed to Texas, although that hasn’t stopped teams from trying to chip away at said commitment.
“I can’t lie, I just don’t know,” Tu’upo said of what it’d take for him to be pushed off his Texas pledge. “I like, I love Texas. I think it’d be really hard to get me off of Texas.”
