The Texas Tech Red Raiders have been “accused” of buying their way back to the top of the Big 12 standings in football, and to be fair, they have spent a ton of money bringing in elite and experienced talented via the transfer portal.
The Red Raiders were even trying to push through an eligibility case for Brendan Sorsby, the top quarterback in the transfer portal, even though he was suspended by the NCAA for allegedly betting on his own team.
Tech and Sorsby eventually parted ways due to the immense public pressure and legal heat that the case brought to Lubbock, but the Red Raiders were game to play Sorsby because of the big investment they made in him via the transfer portal.
Tech won’t stop spending money while it’s still legal to do so in college sports, but head coach Joey McGuire is still doing a good job of building this team the “old-fashioned” way.
Never mind the fact that even recruits are getting NIL deals and promises of millions on the recruiting trail. Recruiting success still comes down to relationships, and McGuire and his staff did a good job of building a trusting one with five-star offensive tackle Austin Attalah.
Ranked as the No. 3 offensive tackle in the 2028 class and the No. 1 recruit from the state of California, according to 247Sports, Attalah committed to Texas Tech on Tuesday.
The USC Trojans and Texas Longhorns were also involved.
