After succeeding with one underdog former New Mexico State quarterback, Vanderbilt is aiming to capture lightning in a bottle twice.
On Tuesday, reporters shared that head coach Clark Lea has named senior quarterback Blaze Berlowitz his starter for Week 1 against FCS Austin Peay. Like former quarterback Diego Pavia, Berlowitz arrived at Vanderbilt in 2024 from New Mexico State alongside offensive coordinator Tim Beck and former head coach Jerry Kill.
His anointment as QB1 comes after a training camp battle with heralded five-star true freshman Jared Curtis, who flipped his commitment from the Georgia Bulldogs earlier this year. ESPN’s Pete Thamel shared that both are anticipated to play in the opener.
