Didn’t Texas Tech Red Raiders head coach Joey McGuire already stir the pot enough during the Brendan Sorsby ordeal? We guess not.
After backing former Red Raiders quarterback Sorsby in his effort to regain eligibility after a gambling suspension, McGuire has rocked the boat again, admitting he’s open to adding NFL players to his roster.

“We’ve been monitoring for the last week or so, how we can add, if possible, somebody to make this team better,” McGuire said as shared by Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith on Wednesday. “We haven’t called any NFL coaches. We haven’t scouted any NFL players, that I think some teams have done, but we’re definitely gonna look.”
The LSU Tigers recently reached agreements with former Ole Miss Rebels tight end Dae’Quan Wright and ex-Rebels defensive tackle Zxavian Harris, both of whom spent time with NFL teams this offseason. Wright signed with the Philadelphia Eagles before the Cleveland Browns added him via the waiver wire. Cleveland since has waived him. Harris, meanwhile, signed a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints.
Other major conferences are aiming to block those moves. On Tuesday, the SEC and Big Ten adopted strict policies to prohibit pro athletes from joining schools and to suspend those who try to break the rules. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have reportedly supported this move. The ACC, meanwhile, is expected to discuss the matter later this week.
On Tuesday, Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reported Texas Tech’s conference, the Big 12, was expected to finalize a similar policy within the next “24-36 hours.” Even if it does, McGuire believes the sporting body will have to go to court.
